there is a report that him and miller are to compete for the SS job but I would much rather send him to AAA and have him come up if any of our IF players go down. IDK how much he is worth but if he plays well in AAA his value can only go up

This is what I posted on another Franklin thread a few weeks back.

From ESPN:

Given that performance, I asked some evaluators how they view Franklin, who turns 23 years old in early March, and what the best approach the Mariners could take with him.

Their feedback:

“I like Franklin -- don't love him,” e-mailed a longtime evaluator. “Have to give him credit for track record and more power than his body would suggest. I think the Dodgers are a good fit, but the Mariners likely won't trade him unless they can fill a specific need. They could still option Franklin and be patient with respect to a trade.”

From a front-office evaluator: “Franklin to me represents extreme risk because of his excessive strikeout ratio. It has always been high, and he's not a terrific athlete either, and had to move from shortstop to second base, and may have to move to the outfield potentially. The best thing the Mariners can do with Franklin is hold on to him, hope he rakes in the PCL and try to include him in a deal for something they want this summer. Robinson Cano, Brad Miller, and Kyle Seager aren't going anywhere.”

They have been talking about how there really isn't much of a value for Franklin for 2 reasons.

1. The Mariners have no leverage in any deal.
2. He is still considered a prospect and you don't much back at all when just dealing a prospect.

In my opinion the only way he has value as an extra piece in a deal involving the big 3.

Agreed and that is why I would not trade him now if ever. Right now he has little value so if he fails like the rest nothing will be lost. If he delivers, then he was worth the 40 man roster spot. The deal would have to be a Stanton or a true #3 or better SP or maybe Kemp. He and other of course for Stanton.

I agree that he should start the year in AAA if he doesnt beat out Miller. Heck whichever one of those two doesnt win the job should be in AAA. There is no value to having one of them sit on the bench.

thanks for all your guys input.

Now that I think of it, we are the Mariners,,,, we are cursed, so its probably a good idea to have a nice backup 2nd base option..........

franklin will probably end up being a league average 2B for a few years, and then a utility guy 5-6 years from now.

I think a little more highly of franklin than most I really think he can be a Neil Walker/ Jason Kipnis type player

Just read the Mets may have interest in Franklin. They discussed him at winter meetings and may get discussions going again.

Sounds like the Rays are interested as well

Mets, Rays Interested In Nick Franklin

By Steve Adams [February 25 at 4:33pm CST]
TODAY, 4:49pm: A Seattle-Tampa deal involving Franklin was close at one point, but the injury to Hellickson threw a wrench into talks, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN.com ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]438445321421484033[/MEDIA]"]via Twitter[/ame]).
4:33pm: The Rays are also contemplating possible deal structures to reel in Franklin, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. A source tells Heyman that Tampa could be a better fit with Seattle than would the Mets, though the possible scenarios under consideration have not been brought to light. As Heyman notes, the two teams have already spent plenty of time looking at each others' players, having already discussed a David Price trade earlier in the offseason.
At first glance, it would seem likely that the Rays would be looking at an acquisition of Franklin primarily as a means of achieving value. The team does not have an immediate need, per se, up the middle, as it possesses options over shortstop Yunel Escobar and second baseman Ben Zobrist for 2015. But with a roster full of versatile players, the Rays certainly have the lineup flexibility to incorporate a player like Franklin. And, of course, the organization probably also has the patienceto keep the 22-year-old in the minors as depth and to maximize his future value. (Franklin has just 126 days of MLB service, making him a possible eventual Super Two, but also meaning that he still comes with five years of MLB control.)
In terms of possible trade targets from Seattle's perspective, the club could probably most stand to add to its rotation. But with the injury to Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa may not feel comfortable dealing from among the candidates for its major league rotation. Of course, since that time, the Rays added Nate Karns in a deal with the Nationals, adding to its depth in that area.

Anybody else get worried when you see that the Rays are interested in a player. Makes me think that Franklin is a lot better then we give him credit for. The Rays always fleece the team that they trade with.
