I don't think the call was that absurd. The issue lies in the puck hitting off of the Preds player. If the ref thought that it was an intentional pass into the zone, there is no offside.
I don't think anyone called that Duchene was in the zone before the puck.

It is obviously the wrong call but not as bad as it first seemed.

That's true, although if the ref thought any pass from a Preds defender back into his own zone was intentional, he needs to have his head examined. Both Preds defenders were trying to knock down that puck because they knew Duchene was in alone behind them.

Kerry Fraser chimes in and concludes the linesman erred in his interpretation of the rule (i.e. the defender needs to establish possession of the puck to either pass or carry the puck into his own zone negating the offside and neither did).
