With the change at OC with Hue Jackson, it is assumed he will run the ball more. This is a great thing. Andy doesn't need to be throwing 50 times per game, he simply isn't good enough to rely on that heavily. If the Bengals can establish themselves as one of the premier running teams in the league and keep Andy at about 20 passes per game, this team will be tough to stop. Our defense and special teams are Super Bowl caliber. Most of our offense is except the QB. I believe if we can get our running game to a Super Bowl level, next year may be a heck of a year for us.

Throw a brinks truck of money at Alex Mack, he'd do wonders for stabilizing the oline. Then get a proper compliment for Gio in the draft and run the ball 35-40 times a game between them.

Totally agree that we need a second running back, I think an Eddie Lacy type of back in the first 2-3 rounds this year. BJGE just isn't good enough. I'm hoping we go CB, RB, S, OL in the first 4 rounds.

Are Hue Jackson and Alex Mack going to magically make the rest our line good run blockers? What about our tight ends? Will they magically elevate our piss-poor YPC? BTW -- Check out Gio's running numbers over the back half of the season before assuming he's Barry Sanders.

No they won't. But if Jackson is serious about being a run first team, then you coach the players with that mentality.
I was under the impression that Zeitler and Andre were better run blockers than pass blockers.
Cook is a turnstile whatever way he tries to block.
This is where someone will post those grades that show i'm wrong.
It doesn't make much difference anyway, this team isn't pro-active enough to sign Mack

Gruden had a pas first mentality and it that is exactly what was coached. If Hue wants to change this team into a run first team, there is plenty of time to prepare for that. We have a very solid Oline and they can run block just about as well as they pass block. We may need 1 more piece to the puzzle, but it's not too far fetched

The numbers simply don't support it. The entire middle of our offensive line (Cook, Zeitler, and Boling) are all much better pass blockers than run blockers. Tits wasn't very good in run blocking this year. You can correct some of this by re-signing Collins and moving Whit inside, but then you are adding a tackle that is VERY slanted toward the pass game.

Then you have our skill positions.... You have two pass catching tight ends that are liabilities in the run game. You have a top 10 receiver that is still getting better (hopefully). You have a third year receiver that demonstrated flashes of brilliance this year (Jones), you have a big third receiver (Sanu) and a guy that can play 5-10 snaps a game and put pressure on the defense due to his quickness (Hawk). You also have a second year running back who is probably more dangerous in the passing game than running attack.

Does this look like a running team to you?

In the hands of a competent qb, this is a dynamic offense.

We're not getting a competent quarteback

So because of this franchise's stubbornness and their unwilling to admit Dalton isn't "the guy", we're stick, and they're going to try and push a round peg into a square hole

But Andy Dalton is NOT a competent qb when called upon to pass the rock 50 times a game. Unfortunately, we are forced to protect him and how do you do that? Establish a running game. If we have a 2 or 3 headed running monster just picking up 4 yards per clip, I think it takes a ton off of Andy.

We turn into a big time running team and make Andy just a cliff note in the offense, Green is as good as gone. Just saying.

Besides, decent defenses can stop t he run pretty easily when they focus on the run. Our offense will look pathetic.

Did anyone read the cincy enquirer article about Sam Wyche? Man, it was really good.

Wyche talked about how Andy doesn't handle adversity well because it's not practiced enough. He said that he would have a big emphasis on those kinds of plays/drives until it becomes the norm for him to face pressure, blitzes, moving throws, big throws...

Makes you wish that they could bring in Wyche just to work as QB coach or consultant. Too bad it won't happen.

“Andy Dalton is a Drew Brees kind of quarterback,” Wyche said “He has the two qualities every quarterback has to have. He’s accurate when he has time, and he’s smart.”

Wyche has noted Dalton’s shortcomings, too. “I would make clutch situations ordinary for him. Those types of situations, we’d practice over and over, until they were routine.’’

Wyche doesn’t understand why most coaches don’t practice game-deciding situations until late in the week. “Two-minute drills, red zone, goal-line’ situations. These are game changers. This is one thing they’re missing the boat on.”

Here are the line's individual PFF ratings (run/pass)

Andre Smith +1.1/+12.2
Kyle Cook -4.3/-0.9
Andrew Whitworth +17.6/+13.1
Kevin Zeitler +4.0/0.0
Clint Boling -3.6/+5.5
Anthony Collins -2.3/+12.8
Mike Pollak -0.6/+2.8
Trevor Robinson -1.7/-2.1

And the tight ends

Jermaine Gresham -10.6/+0.5
Tyler Eifert -8.5/+1.8
Alex Smith -0.6/+0.6

This is a strong pass blocking line, but a mediocre to poor run blocking line. Andre Smith has put up better run blocking numbers in the past, but the weaknesses at center and tight end cannot be denied. Are they going to get better at run blocking just because Hue says they're going to run more?

I believe if you start with the Center, it will filter out. Since the middle is such a huge part of the running game, if you have a poor run blocking center, your guards are going to automatically suffer. Tackles are in space more, so it doesn't affect them as much.

THat's my thought, though. Upgrade at Center, and I think the guards will improve enough. The tackles are fine.

So in other words, we have a coach who wants to run, a line set up to pass block, tight ends who can't do either and a quarterback that's probably reached his ceiling.

To paraphrase Kramer...we're fucked

Cincygrad doesnt believe in what Hue can do with a run game...he will be a believer at end of 2014

it's a passing league

...and it's all about the QB

true or false?
...if you answered 'true', you are with the experts
NE starts to run the ball a little and the bengs immediately change their offensive philosophy

this is how we became the bengals and why we will stay the bengals
