Wes Martin
Washington Redskins
Round: 4, Pick(Ovr): 29(131)

School: Indiana
Info
Height:
6'3"
Weight: 311 lbs

Pos:
Tough, small-area blocker with outstanding strength at the point. Patient and shows a good feel for blocking. Blocks with a nasty attitude and works to annihilate opponents. Sets with a wide base and bends his knees. Keeps his head on a swivel and shows good awareness. Works well with linemates, stays square and makes terrific use of positioning to seal defenders from the action. Very effective fighting with his hands.
Neg:
Short arms. Gets tall as the play proceeds. Lacks footwork in space. Not fluid in motion.
Analysis:
Martin is a tough, slug-it-out lineman who could back up in scheme that does not ask him to cover much area.

#76-left guard Wes Martin-Indiana

Has the second-highest blocking grade the last 4 years among OGs & benches 535

OVERVIEW
Most of the Indiana staff simply calls Wesley Allen Martin "country strong," but one look at his dominance in the trenches and performances in the weight room makes scouts wonder if there might be a red cape and a large "S" on his shirt under his uniform. With 535-pound bench press and a 655-pound squat, perhaps the coaches should see if Martin might have a can of green paint in his locker room that he splashes on to bring a gridiron version of the "Hulk" to the playing field each Saturday.

Familiar comparison... Tre Johnson (for those old enough to remember him)

im old enough. tre was ranked as a 2nd round pick and was a monster at 330. IF he loses the job to Flowers than we probably have ourselves backup b/c Flowers is just average completion at best

Indeed, Tre was a monster at LG. Injuries curtailed his career. I believe Martin gets every opportunity to secure the starting role. If he can improve his "pull" game and pass blocking the job most likely is his.

BTW: Tre now teaches History/English at Landon school in Bethesda!

Just out of curiosity why did you compare him to Tre? Not saying you are wrong, just curious. If he is as good as Tre I will be very happy.

His road grading skills are very comparable, that's the dawg that they share. Tre moved people and so does this guy. Now the comparison falls off when the topic becomes "pulling" and to a slightly lesser degree pass blocking.

I like him better than the guard they picked earlier in the draft, by a large margin.
