what, his will doesn't travel oversees?
I've seen X-men... I could work. he needs to tweak his focus a little bit. maybe put a colander on his head.

but yeah, 87 would have helped. (and Staal, and Letang for that matter)
and pretty much anyone but Getzlaf as captain. I mentioned this pre-tourney, but he doesn't really ooze leadership.

3rd year in a row CAN hasn't made it past the QFs in this tourney.
not good enough.

I thought the forwards group for Canada were pretty good, but the defence corps and goaltenders were adequate bordering on mediocre. Cam Ward didn't get a lot of help, so I can't dump on him too much.

It seems that the trend is that hockey is becoming more and more blue collar. With video, scouting and preparation, it's seeming to come down to who is willing to work harder. That US lineup is absolute crap (the Forward Corps anyway), but they are a bunch of guys who try hard (for the most part). I think Canada's abundance of supreme talent can sometimes be a detriment. I think in some cases, with the wrong leadership, it gives that false sense of "we can turn it on when we need to" mentality. I think Canada needs to think long and hard about who they pick as their leadership core when it comes to these tournaments.

Another thing that hurts the Canadians is that you get no love for your depth. If you guys could dress 2 or 3 squads it would be a different story. Other countries may be able to have a couple star players here and there that can keep up with Canada, but nobody has the depth that Canada does. It's pretty impressive that Canada could dress 3 teams that could be contenders for Gold in most tourneys.

good points. Canada has been used to being an elite team for so long, it kind of expects things to work out.
I have been complaining about that mindset on the Canucks this year. They rarely dug in a worked, as they assumed something good would happen.

On the depth issue, there's an international U-17 tourney where canada splits into geographies and sends about four teams. They usually have 2 or 3 make it to the final four.

FIN 1 - USA 1 after 2 periods.
Finland scores first (weak one on Howard), then USA answered back about 20 seconds later.
Jeff Petrie has been the best player on the ice for the US. saved two sure goals in the first period, has absolutely hammered a couple of guys, and them a great pinch to set up the tying goal. Lots of chances both sides, but finland has been carrying more of the play. Koivu could have had 2 or 3 by now.

Looks like the US team got the best of the Ducks players for this tourney.

Getzlaf screwed up, but nothing should be taken away from the Slovaks.

They had a rough start to the tournament with close losses to Canada and Finland, but then won 5 straight, including a very strong defeat of the US.

They really came to play.

Jack Johnson sucks, but Patrick Dwyer isn't helping matters

Johnson breaks his stick early in a shift, and Dwyer (the forward) gives Johnson his.
When US finally clears the zone - just over the blueline - dwyer takes his stick back and goes for a change.... leaving Johnson without a stick again, and because the puck didn;t get deep, Johnson didn't have time to change (or was too slow)... anyways, he got caught out without a stick again, after a long shift, and M Koivu took advantage. So yeah, Jack Johnson sucks.

2-2 with about 4m left.
I didn't see the 2nd US goal

HOLY FUCK, Finland scores with EIGHT seconds left
3-2. wow. The roof nearly came off that building.

don't know how it's spelled, but sounds like the Finnish version of "Jesse Jones".
after a very strong game, Jeff Petrie was the goat on that coverage.

i dont know ... He was trying to deal with the guy behind the net making the pass out ... Nate Thompson floated back and was 2 feet and 2 seconds late in taking Joensuu's stick away

:(

Bummer. Always tough when goals are scored that late.

Also, sorry if I'm being a :dunce:, but isn't it Jeff Petry? (inside joke???)

the guy behind the net wasn't the threat to score though (unless its Grandlund, I guess)

Petrie neither took the pass, nor the player, and left the most dangerous guy alone in the slot.
yes support coverage was late, but his primary coverage left early.
verdict stands, that one's on him. :lever:

Lowe did a terrible job of picking this team. Youth is nice and all but...

- Ryan Murray did not belong on Team Canada.
- Getzlaf was a poor pick for captain.
- Picking someone like a barely healthy Nugent-Hopkins over a veteran like Spezza is a joke.
- The defense was beyond bad; just a poor mix of defensive and puck moving guys.

Bah. this team was poorly constructed from the get go.

Hmmm...Kinda torn on the Swe - Cze game. On one hand, Cze winning sets up the rivalry game between them and the Slovaks. On the other hand, a win by the Swedes keeps alive a potential Fin - Swe rivalry game.

Yup, and the majority of Oilers fans still have faith in Kevin Lowe. Give him a lifetime contract, I say.

Three Sens (Karlsson, Silverberg and Alfie) on Sweden. GO SWEDEN!!

If Alfie IS going to retire at least let him ride into the sunset with a WHC gold.
