Apparently Michigan was given early access to the field so that Michigan State could do their walk that they have done for the last 12 years with the understanding that Michigan would have to leave the field so that MSU could do the walk. MSU staff asked the 8 players and the coaches to leave the field so that this could be done but they refused to. Both coaching staffs were responsible for this incident.

The conflicting story there is that the other side reports MSU was 10 minutes late and showed up with helmets on, which is apparently unusual.

Their purpose was clear. They came out late to intimidate the Mich players who were using their allotted time on the field. Confirmed when Dantonio thought he needed to lie about smiling behind his players being physical in an attempt to be intimidating.

One team put their hands on the other during warmups, the other team ripped up some grass in retaliation. You tell me who's ultimately wrong there; the answer should be easy.

They shouldn't have had to, if MSU was out on the field on time. But since they were late, it seems reasonable that they could share the field, perform their walk and calmly walk around the Mich players warming up during their allotted time. You get to ask people to leave the field when you're on time.

Would it surprise you if Harbaugh asked those players to stay out on the field no matter what to cause an incident? It wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Except some players, as you said, did leave the field. Which would make that seem less likely.
