Elliotte Friedman said in my link above that the Panthers were also looking to shed some salary as they have a number of young guys that they need to re-sign (including Ekblad). Not sure how much Gudbranson might get in his next contract, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the 4.5 to 5 million per season range.

I agree. And that's the problem. You just don't pay that type of defenseman that much money. You can get replacement value for WAY cheaper.

Is Eric Gryba really that much worse than Gudranson? I don't think so. No one would give him that money because he wasn't 3rd overall. Gubranson will need to be qualified at $3.5 for his next contract and unless he improves that's probably too much.

Based on his play the last 2 years he's a bottom pairing player who is overpaid.

I just wish Ottawa had called Benning about Jared Cowen last summer.:sigh:

Gillis tried to get Gubranson out of Florida for both Hodgson and then for Luongo so I guess Benning one upped him lol

idk what to make on Gudbranson ... I rated him (as everyone did) when he first came into the league but he now seems to be what he is ... has he hit a plateau in his development? :noidea: stats community doesnt like the player all that much ... is he the second coming of Bryan Allen?

Do not dare take the name of any most righteous Oshawa Generals player in vain. :nono:

4th overall pick for Allen in his draft year ... 3rd overall for Gubberson (as he will know be known)
6'5 v 6'5
Bryan Allen actually had better offensive production early in his career :L

Yikes. You have my condolences.

I watched Allen in Junior. Broke his leg and missed most of one year. Big boy, had some talent, but never understood why he went first round.

IMO first round D need to have some offensive prowess. Crazy to use a first rounder on a stay-at-home guy.

Tyler Benson would have been around for that 2nd round pick too

I think that's the thing that would bother me the most if I were a Canucks fan, giving up pick #33 when you are a rebuilding/retooling on the fly team. That pick is essentially a late 1st round pick (good chance to be a solid NHL player).

that was my first take in this thread ... post #4

benning says all the time how he loves the draft ... speaks almost orgasmically about it ... has said this is the way he will build the team ... and so he trades an early second rounder :L

I will say this, though, at least Benning isn't shy about shaking things up which is a lot more than you can say about the Oilers brain trust.

They shook up their D last year dash. They added three guys before the season. They also added Talbot. It just didn't matter.

Yeah, but in my opinion, that's a whole lot of nibbling around the edges. The core of the team is rotten and we all know who comprises the core and that's what needs to be addressed.

Well McTavish said he was going to do something big & it never happened. We're still waiting for Ciarelli to make his mark on the team. I expect him to trade for a defenseman. Not a bottom 6 guy. A #1 or #2. This would definitely shake up the roster if it happens. We'll see. I'm curious to see what happens with Shattenkirk in St. Louis.

Who do you think Calgary wants in goal Jake Allen, Fleury or Halak?

Call me crazy, but I would take Fleury because I think the return to Pittsburgh wouldn't be all that much and he still is a darn good goalie (significant improvement over what we currently have in Calgary). Of course, the upcoming expansion draft is going to have a lot of good goalies unprotected, so the question is why put together a good package for a goalie when you might be able to land one for free?

Kypreos and MacLean were saying they bet Elliott will be on the market this summer, not Allen. Fleury, Elliott or Halak?

No brainer for me. Elliott any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

They would still have to give something up. The teams with the most depth are the ones who will be hurt the most by expansion. I don't like it. I think there are to many teams in the league as it is.

Bettman has been promising the owners expansion revenue for years. It's not a matter of if, but when NHL expansion takes place.
