Through 3 games.

Tommy Armstrong has turned the ball over 1 time.

Let's bump this thread as the season goes along. I'm assuming the ranking will either stay fairly consistent or go south very quickly depending on if we win or lose.

First of all, that backwards pass should have NEVER been called in that situation.

14 yards out and trying to tie the game going into half......and we're not looking towards the endzone? That PISSED me off. That was a horrible play call. No matter what in that situation, you move the ball forward. You move it towards your target.

Second of all, the pass should have been caught. These are College level players. You catch that pass. It's not like he had to go out of his way to close his hands on the ball. Catch it.

But yea, the play should have NEVER been called there.

Tommy is responsible for 1 turnover, and it was one of the worst I've seen him commit. He threw that pass back against the grain and didn't even see the DB.

I agree the call should have never been made. Considering the situation, the passer and the competition we needed to move ahead as you said.
With that said Tommy did throw the pass behind the player making it very difficult to catch.

So many positives out of that Oregon game.

Do you guys just completely ignore any info other than what you see on the TV screen? That play wasn't a "backwards pass". Wilbon looped too far back and Tommy's drop was only about half as deep as it should have been. That's a 5 step drop playcall and his footwork was all screwed up. This whole "OMG why the hell would we call a backwards pass?!?!?!" is really dumb.

I just read, blah blah, blah blah blah.:comeatmebro:

I know I commented, "Can we get rid of that play."

For some reason, the QB was in the wrong place, the running back was in the wrong place, and the line didn't make a block. Hmmmm, sounds like this play might not suit the current players or else it was called during the
wrong defensive formation. Either way, don't run that play when the chance of a mistake is way too much. And it was costly.

Langsdorf needs to look at himself as being part of the problem also on that play. Even with that play, I still give Langsdorf an A+ on how he called the plays the entire game.

Definition of Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

I won't disagree that that particular play might be above our level. What I'm saying is that we didn't call a backwards pass there. The worst case for that play should have been either an incomplete pass or a tackle for loss. There were 3 major things that broke down on that play that led to the turnover, and all of them were in the execution, not the playcall.

I know the backwards pass wasn't the play that was called, all i'm tryna say is that i believe Tommy is credited with the fumble and therefore has 2 turnovers on the year

Love Tommy, love Langs, we beat Oregon

it is quite remarkable, but lets be real, it was all from the WYO game. I guess Fresno St gave us some too. i'm not expecting it going forward. we had 3 fumbles against OR, were lucky to get 2 back.

as for the backwards pass, i just don't get what Wilbon was doing, he had the chance to jump on that immediately, but instead threw his arms up in the air in disgust. i just don't get why RBs always assume that's a forward pass, i'd be coaching them to treat those plays as live balls until the whistle.

but as others have said, it's a poor play call 14 yds from the endzone. just doesn't make sense, you can't run off of the DBs because your WRs aren't going deep, so at best it's a short gain, not a TD play imo.

The call wasn't a backwards pass. That's not the issue. The issue I have is there would have been no danger of throwing a backwards pass if we just look towards the dadburned endzone.

Don't even put yourself in position to potentially throw a lateral there. Terrible playcall given the situation. Every coordinator out there makes bad calls from time to time. It happened there.

We can sit here and say "well if Wilbon was in the right position and it Tommy did this or that, then it would have worked 9 times out of 10."

I've seen those plays turn into fumbles so often. That was a critical drive in the game and we're lucky we didn't lose the damn game because of it. It was a 2 TD swing at the snap of a finger because of carelessness.

We ran the same play 4 other times for ~30 yards. We had to test the edges of their D to get them pulled out of the middle of the field so we could keep pounding them with the run game. Being an OC is more than just trying to score a touchdown on every play.

i was implying what JJM was saying and at the same time agreeing with you oak. i think its a good play call if you are 80yds away from the endzone and the D is in man coverage because you hope the RB has an LB on him and the WRs run off the DBs. down there in the redzone, it looked to me on that play Oregon was in zone, plus even if they aren't in zone, the DBs don't have to chase a WR downfield because there isn't any room.

forgive me if i am wrong, i haven't had a chance to review game film, nor have I actually watched the entire 2nd half because i had family obligations keeping me from seeing it.

I don't disagree that there is not as much space. That said, a lot of things had to go wrong to give us the result that we got. Bad things happen sometimes. Sure, you can do things to mitigate some of the risk, but you also can't avoid running certain plays because of every possible thing that could go wrong. For example, should we stop running guys in motion in front of the QB because we snapped the ball into our WR and caused a fumble?

If Wilbon catches that pass and takes it to the house, you'd all be sucking Langsdorf's pee-shooter today.
