On Friday the Washington Redskins announced another signing and another cut from the roster.

As sources suggested earlier this week, the Redskins have signed undrafted free agent offensive lineman Takoby Cofield (6-foot-4, 310-pounds) from Duke.

From the Redskins press release …

Played collegiately at Duke, where he played in 51 career games, starting the final 42 consecutive contests at left tackle... As a senior in 2014, earned third-team All-ACC honors after starting all 13 games for an offense that ranked first in the ACC in sacks allowed per passing attempt and second in sacks allowed per game... Started all 14 games as a junior in 2013, helping Duke set school single-season records for first downs, offensive yards and points... In 2012, started all 13 games as a sophomore and helped the Blue Devils become the second team in ACC history to have two 1,000-yard receivers in the same season... Played in 10 games with two starts as a freshman in 2011... Redshirted in 2010.

To make room for Cofield, the Redskins have released offensive lineman Xavier Nixon.

Cofield’s signing brings the count of undrafted free agent signings to 12.

Here's what CBS Sports has to say:
STRENGTHS: Adequate height and length for the position – well-conditioned and takes care of his body…moves well on his feet, showing nimble feet and some lower body flexibility in his pass-sets…displays a basic understanding of body angles…good first step as a run blocker, generating an initial surge off the snap to put defenders on their heels…improved awareness and recognition skills to set-up shop and prepare for stunts – tactful competitor who won’t take plays off…comfortable in space and will eliminate defenders at the second level…consistent playing temperament and doesn’t get too high or too low throughout four quarters…durable and started the last 42 consecutive games at left tackle for Duke.

WEAKNESSES: Light lower body and doesn’t have an ideal anchor, struggling to sink with sand…needs to add patience to his play style and restrain himself from overextending – likes to hop off the snap in pass pro…bad habit of lunging with his upper body and an overaggressive punch…hand placement is all over the place in pass protection and as a run blocker, struggling to latch-and-control his targets…limited lateral range and will struggle with edge speed…functional power is based more on momentum than core strength…missed spring practice (Feb. 2014) due to a knee sprain…late to gain proper body position in the run game, leaving holes in the pipe…needs to flash more of a mean streak to bury defenders, not just block their path.

IN OUR VIEW: Although guard Laken Tomlinson receives most of the attention on Duke’s offensive line, Cofield started 42 straight games at left tackle and has produced NFL worthy film of his own. He was a steady edge blocker for the Blue Devils, using adequate size, athleticism and constant hustle to get the job done. Cofield needs to introduce discipline to his play style to limit his lunges and improve his anchor to better sink in his stance to survive at the next level. Although he has wrinkles to iron out and his lack of range of physical tools aren’t ideal, Cofield shows promise and has enough talent to grow into a reserve swing tackle in the NFL – worth late round consideration.A three-star offensive tackle out of high school, Cofield committed to Duke over offers from East Carolina and Wake Forest, redshirting in 2010. He started the 2011 season as the back-up, starting the final two games at left tackle due to injuries. Cofield became the full-time starter at left tackle as a sophomore in 2012, starting all 13 games. He started all 14 games at left tackle in 2013 and all 13 games in 2014 as a senior. Cofield earned an invitation to the 2015 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

I will simply say this.... It would kick ass if Scot struck the balance between what we have all been preaching. I admit I wanted to go HEAVY O-line early in the draft. And we did for the first pick. But he has drafted a Guard in Kojo who should develop into a good player in a few years, and now picking up this guy. We are finally putting some big boys back on the line.

Would be ironic if there was some family connection to Barry. Anyone know if there is?

Hogs 2.0? or maybe a new moniker! In any case let's not forget that monster Austin Reiter at center. Sure he's a long shot, but a 6'4" 300 lbs CENTER is gonna impress somebody just standing there.

We could call the new, and improved, O-line Hogwarts.

And for more Harry Potter connections check this blog out:

The matching colours The Redskins share with Gryffindor convinces me JK Rowling is secretly a Skins fan LOL.

Hopefully he gives Compton a good battle. Compton didn't show me anything last year. Worst case scinero is the practice squad. He got one of the largest signing bonuses for all of the undrafted FA. Skins must see something n him.
