well, it was asked if he was a racist. this thread has gone in 3 directions since.

Sure, but it hadn't yet done that when you posted your comment about the movie.

It's not a big deal, I mean there was certainly a point in time where almost no one "knew" that Stump was a liar so to some degree we were all "fooled".

Well, it would be interesting if one of baseball's arguably three best players was a racist. Granted, it would obviously be different than if someone was racist today, but it would still be noteworthy. Luckily, the facts look like he (at the least) wasn't overtly racist, contrary to nearly universal belief.

Oh, and who gives a fuck about his batting average or hits?
Ruth, Bonds, Cobb?

I think it's a tough one tween Ty and Gehrig for third.

I do think Cobb was a racist and real SOB.

Just not of the psychopath variety. The normal everyday kind.

The headline had nothing to do with his play on the field though. You posted something that you now admit is only accurate "on the playing side" in response to a question having nothing to do with "the playing side". It's a bit of a head-scratcher.

And I think you're wrong on Joe. His actions/guilt are fairly well established at this point I think. But we are all suckers for an underdog story.

PS shoeless joe hit .375 in that world series, and was flawless in the field. he was also aquitted by a jury. food for thought...

I knew these things already. Do you know how that was split out?

.250 in the four thrown games, .500 in the four that were on the level. This is not really hard evidence of anything, any more so than the .375 overall BA is. But it's interesting.

The trial was not simply a ruling on the question "did these guys throw the series?". It had to be shown that they did so with the specific intent of defrauding the public.

Let me find something that explains this quicker and better than I can.

You just know that Cobb would get all hopped up on bootlegged moonshine, and then go dance the Charleston all night, capping the evening off by killing the kneegrow that stood on the wrong side of the dance hall, on the way home.

it doesnt explain his fielding. his teammates were booting balls. he didnt. they could have been pitching to him differently too, who knows?

i see the splits more as coincidental than anything. the fielding stands out to me.
