Cobb had some completely fictional biography work done on him just prior to and immediately following his death.

The narrative of him as some crazy racist monster sold. And stuck.

Very little to actually back up the things said about him and his racist hatred. (Al Stump I believe is the author who created the narrative.)

It seems to me that Cobb was just a super-competitive jerk who wanted to win more than anything else. Unfortunately, that rubbed some of his teammates (notably Sam Crawford) the wrong way, but that doesn't make a guy a racist.

My brother, a Conservative, sent me that video from Conservative Prager University. He doesn't know anything about baseball (like, he didn't know who Ty Cobb was. He probably knows Babe Ruth, but I doubt he could name a single player still playing today, aside from maybe Chase Utley because he remembers me talking about him 24/7 growing up). I am a Liberal, but I agree (obviously) that you should not call people racist because they were good or because it's convenient or because you want to disparage them. It seems to me that Al Stump is the real prick here.

Top 5 player or position player? I think he would be just outside the top 5 for overall players for me, but I can see an argument for top 5 position player behind Ruth, Bonds, Mays, and Williams.

He has the 7th highest wRC+ of all time, while playing in 3000 games. 500 more games than 5 of the 6 players ahead of him. Had he retired in 1922, he would have had 2300 games (still more than Williams, Hornsby, Gehrig, and just 100 fewer than Mantle, all are ahead of him on the list) and he would have retired with a 174 wRC+ which would have been the 3rd highest all-time. So take those guys careers, and add 6 years and 730 games of a 136 wRC+. His overall career numbers will decrease but there's no denying there's value in those extra years. I don't knock him overall for that.

It's nearly impossible to understand the true impact (positive or negative) of his baserunning back then, but fangraphs does have it as a positive part of his offensive game. Which is why (also longevity being a factor) he has the 4th highest offensive WAR of all-time, behind Bonds, Ruth, and Williams (fangraphs).

Defensively? Who knows really. I feel comfortable moving Mays ahead of him because of defense, not sure I would anyone else. Maybe Hornsby?
