I would say the thing I love about this video is Phillips knows that you can't just come into a team and have a set defense the way you like it and expect the players to play in that system. I've said this many of times but Del Rio seemed very set on trying to get a square peg to fit into a round hole. Some of our players were playing out of position while others were playing to their strengths. Designing a defense that takes advantage of all the players strengths makes much more sense to me. So the fact that he has had 3 different positions out of the front 7 lead the team in sacks (probably will have 4 of the 7 since Von will be on SOLB spot). Just shows he caters the defense especially towards the best player on the defense to make sure and take advantage of what they can do. Throw in you see that he shows what a player does depends on what their capabilities are. He doesn't try to force a guy to fit such as the NT...If they are a big powerful guy like Knighton most likely he is working not to so much shoot the gap but go after the right or left shoulder of the Center and push them back to disrupt the play in the backfield. If we get a faster smaller guy like Sly Williams in at that NT position then yes have him shoot that gap and see if he can get that Center unbalanced.

That, does not cause any real disruption with communication within the offense. Their blocking assignments are pretty clear cut.

Now, with him and Ware as OLBs it can cause more communication problem. They will not know which one is coming and from where they are coming. They will be needing to identify that. Plus Wolfe and Sylvester can push the pocket.

Believe me I remember you petitioning hard for us to make this change and I definitely agree with you. I actually was/is very surprised at the production they got from Von Miller playing the 4-3 OLB spot. Even being out of position he still was a top-3 Defensive player in the league. Very interested to see what he can do now that he is at a more natural position. I do wonder a little if they might have Miller and Ware switch sides though. In the video Phillips had mentioned that the faster OLB usually plays the weakside but at the same time Miller is the better run defender of the two so maybe they do keep him at that strong side. Either way going to be fun to watch. Hoping they also move him into the ILB position some like we saw with Green Bay this year with Matthews so that he can come at the quarterback up the middle. Like you said the 3-4 allows the defense to disguise what is going on much better than the 4-3. Phillips has the best group of defensive players he has ever had at his finger tips. Going to be interesting to see what he does with it.

Great points guys and also when you bring the dbs up close to line of scrimmage,in the 3-4 it makes it even tougher to figure out who`s coming and whose not. Much better to disguise your D and keep the offense guessing. As long as you mix it up and do and "individual" game plan for each team. Knowing where you can exploit their weak spots. Very unlike Rio, who rarely disguised anything. I`am looking forward to seeing a much better, unpredictable D this season and hopefully a "whole can" of intensity for 60 mins EVERY game.

Basically, you are very limited in what you can do as far as disguise from a 4-3. That is my main problem with that alignment.

I agree 100% Bb32. Even with 4-3, Del Rio could have had a little more imagination and presented some different looks to at least try to disguise their intent. He choose not too and that was baffling to me. Not to mention his lack of prep for offenses each week as well. Soooo glad he's gone and somebody else gets a shot at utilizing the talent that's there on the D.
