TSN/Globes Dave Naylor throws the CHL under the bus

"There isnt a country in the world where people pay to go watch a sport where 16,17 & 18 year olds bare knuckle fight"

That's a little off the mark, I pay money to go watch a exciting junior hockey game, do fights occur, yes they do, but it's not like I'm disappointed if there are no fights.

Maybe we should just have them thumb wrestle when they want to make a statement on the ice?

Or maybe make a statement by outplaying them in the game.

Besides a lot of statements that are made are 'our team carries a tougher player who cannot really play hockey than your teams tough player who cannot really play hockey'.

I agree that the "enforcer" role is dumb, and I would be completely behind eliminating that type of player. But your normal aggressive player like Lucic and many others deserve the right to fight in a game to either get retribution for a cheap hit or stimulate their team to play harder.

But to fight for shits and giggles because that is "your job", or to scrum with someone for laying a legit hit, that is lame.

Can the two be divided and can everyone be happy? Prolly not.

Or legally knock the shit out of someone with a devastating legal open ice hit which takes a hell of a lot more skill...

:noidea:

Agreed, but I am still all for fighting. If another player lands a cheap shot on yourself or a fellow teammate, he should be lambasted. Not slapped on the wrist by the league.

Once again, I do not agree with the Enforcer role. But I am 110% behind fighting.

I agree with this, and it used to be that you would wait for an opportunity to lay a clean lick on the guy who got you or a member of his team. Now, as soon as a guy lays a big check (clean or not) on a guy, the gloves come off and the fight begins.

I'm not exactly sure when this changed, but I don't think we can ever go back to the way ot used to be.

Half the time the fights like your first scenario are after clean hits a player is not happy with. Fighting after one of those is stupid and takes away from what may have been an more aggressive and exciting game. Its settling something in a non-part of the game that should be settled in the game.

I have always found fighting to fire your team up a really stupid reason for a fight. And besides most of the time enforcers do that fighting.

Why do they "deserve" that right?

It's not granted in baseball, football, or basketball, or any other major team sport. You don't see regular fights at rugby matches, and I'd dare you to call one of those guys a "pussy." Sure, I get it that things get overheated from time-to-time in any sports and guys boil over (and are tossed or suspended for it), but it's not a built in part to those sports b/c it doesn't have anything to do with the GAME itself.

What makes hockey different from lacrosse, football, or rugby that fighting is necessary?

Fighting was never allowed in any of those sports either. It is in hockey.

I know taking potshots at the CHL is akin to being anti-canadian (or like booing Santa Claus) because of how entrenched in our culture junior hockey is but why not ban fighting amongst the kids/juniors

i posted it before ... Hockey Canada and the CHL have to be the first ones to take the stand NOT THE NHL ... protect the kids ... or are the junior team owners across canada too afraid it will cut deeply into their bottom lines

That's not a good argument. I'm asking what is different about hockey that makes it necessary, because I don't see a difference. Between baseball and basketball - sure, though sports are not big contact sports. But hockey, lax, rugby, etc. They are all very similar in terms of hits, violence, etc., so why don't they have fighting?

If you just love fighting and it excites you, by all means, that's just a difference in taste and I understand the appeal. It's not my thing, but I certainly get why people like it and don't fault them for it.

But my point is - I don't see where it's an important cornerstone of the game. It seems like it was a minimal part of it for a long time, the Broad St. bullies came along, and "the code" has been getting a little more out of control ever since.
