As somebody pointed out, huge signing considering the Cardinals lost Pujols and the Brewers lost Fielder.
I gotta say, as a Reds fan I'm not sure this move was the wisest. They have him under contract for 2 more years. I might have let this year play out at least before annoiting him the franchise. Time will tell but as a small/mid market team it will be tough to build a roster with one guy eating up so much dough into his late 30's.

I think Votto is a guy that you can trust to not self destruct and to do the right things. He's solid. I remember he had some issues with Migraines or vertigo or something that you never know about. If they get a substantial revenue increase from a new TV contract then that would definitely help. Overall though Bob Castellini is a helluva lot smarter than me. So if he's comfortable with it I guess it's a good calculated gamble. Definitely can't fault the guy for investing to win. Wish he was in control of the Bengals.
Someone on Mo's show the other day was saying that one of the big pluses for the Reds signing Votto now, is that they are going to get him cheaper over the long haul than if they had waited even another year or two until his contract was out.
He said the influx of new TV money that all MLB teams will be getting over the next few years, plus increased revenue from online streaming games for MLB teams will start to push the 20-25mil a year players into the 30+ mil a year because team revenues are all going to increase.
Also, the deal is heavily back-loaded. The Reds are expected to get a new local deal in the next 2-3 years with FSN, though the deal does currently run through 2016. With additional revenue from that deal kicking in to cover the expense of Votto, the Reds should still have roughly the same % of their payroll to spend on surrounding him with good enough talent, unlike when Griffey was brought here.
We'll see if it actually works out that way. Votto is a guy that you could see getting the most out of his ability until he's into his mid 30's because of his position (less wear and tear) and his dedication to his body and routine to be the best he can be. I don't think anyone sees him slacking off or taking time away no matter how good he becomes. That drive could net an additional year or two of solid play from him.
His 'anxiety' was because he broke up with his boyfriend who threatened to out him.

It was a joke.
Votto is easily as gay as Ced Benson
