As somebody pointed out, huge signing considering the Cardinals lost Pujols and the Brewers lost Fielder.

So what are the chances, I wonder, that the Bengals will go out and do something huge to try and compete?

Answer : about as low as whale turds get when they settle at the bottom of the ocean.....

I gotta say, as a Reds fan I'm not sure this move was the wisest. They have him under contract for 2 more years. I might have let this year play out at least before annoiting him the franchise. Time will tell but as a small/mid market team it will be tough to build a roster with one guy eating up so much dough into his late 30's.

I see your point, and I don't totally disagree with you....this was important as a symbolic gesture to the fans that the office recognized they had one of the league's greatest players, who wanted to be a Red for life, and they kept him.....as far as the cost goes, had this played out for two years and he hit the market in free agency, the price would have been driven up even farther, to a point they surely couldn't afford....it's debatable that he can be afforded now, but perhaps this will drive ticket sales up to the point they can grow the overall payroll......long contracts are always a gamble, and I would much prefer that he was extended for five years instead of ten, but the facts are if you want to play, these are the rules now.....I for one will go back to the park this year, for the first time in a long time, and I'm sure many others will do the same.....

I think as a gesture it's great. I have a hard time faulting the organization for investing heavily in their players. That being said, it's a huge gamble. Time will tell if it was a prudent move or not. Overall, I'm not sure how much it will drive up ticket sales long term. We've had Votto here for a while and ticket sales have been okay. I think we'll see a bounce at the jump but for the tix sales to sustain at a high rate they need to win. If they're mediocre this year (and the next ten) the sales will reflect that (despite Votto and his huge contract).

Someone on Mo's show the other day was saying that one of the big pluses for the Reds signing Votto now, is that they are going to get him cheaper over the long haul than if they had waited even another year or two until his contract was out.

He said the influx of new TV money that all MLB teams will be getting over the next few years, plus increased revenue from online streaming games for MLB teams will start to push the 20-25mil a year players into the 30+ mil a year because team revenues are all going to increase.

Also, the deal is heavily back-loaded. The Reds are expected to get a new local deal in the next 2-3 years with FSN, though the deal does currently run through 2016. With additional revenue from that deal kicking in to cover the expense of Votto, the Reds should still have roughly the same % of their payroll to spend on surrounding him with good enough talent, unlike when Griffey was brought here.

We'll see if it actually works out that way. Votto is a guy that you could see getting the most out of his ability until he's into his mid 30's because of his position (less wear and tear) and his dedication to his body and routine to be the best he can be. I don't think anyone sees him slacking off or taking time away no matter how good he becomes. That drive could net an additional year or two of solid play from him.

I think Votto is a guy that you can trust to not self destruct and to do the right things. He's solid. I remember he had some issues with Migraines or vertigo or something that you never know about. If they get a substantial revenue increase from a new TV contract then that would definitely help. Overall though Bob Castellini is a helluva lot smarter than me. So if he's comfortable with it I guess it's a good calculated gamble. Definitely can't fault the guy for investing to win. Wish he was in control of the Bengals.

His 'anxiety' was because he broke up with his boyfriend who threatened to out him. :fencing:

Keep in mind too, the Reds tv contract currently only pays them $10 million a season. Recent tv deals to the Rangers and Angels etc have been well above $100 million a season and in the Rangers case $150 million a year.

Granted, we will not see anything like that, but we have a very large tv base that ranges from northern Ohio, through KY to Tennessee, to Indiana and over to parts of West Virginia. We have a very large tv base. That new contract may be in the $75 million a year range. However, if that happens, we will probably lose our revenue sharing of about $20 million. Still that is enough to offset Votto's contract, Bruce and resign Cueto, Latos, Chapman (if he turns into a solid LH starter).

You're thinking of Cedric Benson.
