According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets and free agent right-hander Justin Verlander are in agreement on a two-year, $86.6 million contract.
Heyman adds that the deal also contains a $35 million vesting option for a third season in New York. Verlander reunites with former teammate Max Scherzer on the Mets, and will help mitigate the loss of generational talent Jacob deGrom, who signed a massive five-year, $185 million contract last week with the Rangers. The 39-year-old veteran right-hander, who took home the American League Cy Young Award last month, finished last year with a microscopic 1.75 ERA and 0.83 WHIP and 185/29 K/BB ratio across 175 innings (28 starts) for the World Series champion Astros. Despite his advanced age, Verlander should be a consensus top 10 starting pitcher in fantasy drafts next spring.
