Wanna bet that both sides agree with you?

I respect any opinion that uses logical thinking, regardless of whether I agree with that viewpoint. Independent thinking is critical.

I'm certainly not saying that SOME of those who take offense to the name don't have legitimate reasons for feeling that way.

I am crying BS on a lot of the arguments being presented as 'reasons' for outrage however.

I see what you attempted to do. But lets face it, even Mrs Harjo has likely never actually experienced a time when the word redskin was used in a negative way. So while she choose to dwell on what she thinks is a slur from the past, I accept what i have always KNOWN the word to mean in my life time.

I am not sure how old you are though relevant in your last post. I am nearly 61 years old and have KNOWN the meaning of this in my lifetime from its' historical implications. This does not discount anything that you have KNOWN in your lifetime. I clearly remember the first publicly KNOWN objections to the team name happening about 45 years ago. Does this cover your age group?

Yea, it does. And I wil lsay again, even some one who was around when the team FIRST took the name likely has no basis to be hurt other than saying well I read or heard it was a slur 200 years ago and thus im offended. Again I liken it to some one telling you something is a bad word... unless you are TOLD Redskins is a slur, odds are it never would have dawned on any one in either of our life times at this point.

You know Shark...........there is a reason that I continue to use the historical perspective. Longevity is something that most of us strive for in our lifetimes, should we all be blessed with long lives. However, have you ever wondered about the course of history if not for mans inhumanity to man? Most people do not............unless there is a direct link to their current life or a current family members life. I'll leave it at that!!!

Now here is a person who wants to start a political thread and happens to be a living contradiction to his own socialist views...........If you don't understand that maybe starting with something smaller like, there, their, they're will suffice....oops, do. Wouldn't hurt to learn to cross your T's or at least add one where it's needed. Goodbye troll!!!!!

Sty... I think a basic difference here is this. Its fine to remember the past, it will likely keep you from making the same mistakes over and over one would hope. But to get stuck in he past and not move forward is just as damaging and more so. I cant do anything about what happened during slavery. I know it happened, but Im not going to blame every white person I see on a daily basis for something their ancestors may or may not have been a part of. So yes I hopefully look forward to a long and fruitful life from this day forward. But Im not going to keep looking at the past going thats fucked up and because that was fucked up. I can make some seven degrees of Kevin Bacon connection to something in the past with the white boy across the street reminds me of from a time I didnt even live in. If the American Indians ( I refuse to call them Natives because Im just as NATIVE as any of them at this point), but if they want to move forward, they need to fix their shit. Stop with the you guys screwed over my great uncle so I should get some get back. Quit fixating on a word that in the grand scheme of things can not hurt them and worry about fixing real issues.

Just to that point, do you realize what it costs to maintain a federal case on a yearly basis?? Or how much a 60 minute whoa is me commercial costs during the NBA finals?? If I were and American Indian I would be more pissed that all this money and effort is being wasted to try and change a team name while 70% of American Indians dont even have the grades to get accepted to college. And the few well to do Indians are more concerned with a football teams name?? Because it hurts their feelings what it MIGHT have meant 350 years ago?? Give me a fucking break man. You and i both know that the simple fact that no one can even prove the origin of the word blows the who its always been a racial slur BS out of the water.

Skinsdad bought up Ernie Davis not I, Washington drafted Davis 1st overall and Marshall not McPeak immediately traded him to Cleveland.

We will agree to disagree on how we view your point of excluding a race vs. the team name. I totally respect your right to see it that way..........I just happen to see it as injustice vs. injustice, so we agree on respecting each others right to our own views.......refreshing!!! Thanks!!!

Otherwise I have no issues with your last post.

"But on the morning of the December 4 draft and with Marshall’s approval, McPeak had secretly agreed to trade Davis to the Cleveland Browns for veteran Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Jackson, a black halfback whom he asked Cleveland to take with one of their two first-round picks. The deal was kept secret pending its completion and because Mitchell had the rest of the regular season and possibly postseason to play."

There is a lot more to the story. Marshall wasn't sure he would win a salary battle with the AFL. He contacted Cleveland some time before the draft to see if Cleveland would trade Bobby Mitchell for a 2nd round pick.

Not sure if everyone knows this or not, the Redskins were orignially the Boston Braves, they played in Boston Braves (baseball team) stadium Braves Field. A year later they moved to Fenway where of course the Red Sox played and changed their name to Boston Redskins.

So basically but for the hosting baseball teams name, we might have become the Boston (now Washington) Blackhawks if the baseball team had been the boston black sox?? The irony of it all. :)

Yeah kind of funny when you actually see the history of everything. As we all know people use certain parts of history to illustrate their point without using all the history available to them because that doesn't suit their side of the story. Lord knows the media does that on a regular basis. I heard one media member say Redskin fans mock Indians because some where face paint and headresses. :noidea:

Your lack of historical understanding is stunning!!! Buffalo from the old AFL had also drafted Ernie Davis two days prior to DC drafting him, though it was known the Davis had no desire to become the next Jackie Robinson in Washington he awaited contractual offers before deciding which team to play with. J.P. Marshall on the day of the draft traded Davis to Cleveland. He couldn't refuse to play in DC because no contract was ever offered nor signed. Further his rights belonged to Cleveland (Buffalo if he opted to sign there)

So, Bobby Mitchell was reportedly to have been treated well by a racist owner, I guess that rendered him no longer a racist. Good call on this one.

BTW: What new form of nonsense are you trying to conjure up with respect to your three points on Bailey, Schlereth, Gannon et. al. If you are able to understand that there are racists in every walk of life, then and now, then how is it possible to not understand that there are plenty of people working for others with racists attitudes as we speak? It is not cowardice, posturing, nor silence for a price. It IS their current, public, evolved position.

Do yourself a favor, take a look at our avatars and tell me if it is possible that we come from differing backgrounds. Outrage is a response for the weak minded, determination and purpose make far better responses to objectionable stimuli. To paraphrase, don't get mad......get even. BTW: where you come from is not remotely comparable to where I come from.

It only cost me my time to watch a football game....my free time, which is mine to do as I please. It is a cop out to insinuate that I believe as you do or I have no merit.

You had every right to withdraw your support from the Bullets/Wizards but don't fool yourself into believing that principle......not principal as you continue to write had anything to do with it. Because I take you at your word, you stopped supporting them....the main (principal) reason being they changed, and not because of some set of moral values (principle) that you object to.

lets go point by point here stymie , the AFL bills , in year one of their operation were not considered anything more then a minor league team certainly not an option

davis did in fact refuse to play for the skins . he made it publicly known that he would not sign with the skins if they picked him hence causing the trade with cleveland

as for marshall , he was a racist . all i said was mitchell said the owner treated him well

your lack of understanding about finance is apparent . you dont watch the redskins "for free" the TV rating that you contribute to when you turn the dial to redskins game determines the amount of money a TV station will offer the skins for the advertisers . so you are in fact putting your entertainment dollar into the redskins pockets

what you dont get is i doubt you have a real big issue with the name at all . actions speak louder then words and your actions are not in line with your words because if they offend you you would take actions .

of course we come from different backgrounds but 1 plus 1 still equals 2 no matter where you come from

if you dont like something , if you see something that offends you , then you dont support it in any way home team or not

and no matter how many times you correct my grammar , spelling or whatever it wont change a thing . but continue to correct it if it makes you feel superior but know this i can use all the proper english grammar , context , i want to but i simply am not worried about it in this format .

i gave 3 options as to what the above players could be thinking . you chose cowardice over all of them

if you have other possible reasons then i am all ears .

i stopped supporting the washington basketball team because of the PC changing of the name . i could care less what you or anyone else thinks about it I KNOW why i did it . but know this i doubt anyone has ever made that link here before me

National Football League: NFL Draft History - by Team

by the way ernie davis was NEVER drafted by the BILLS as the above link shows . in 1962 or the previous year

The decision of the Redskins to draft Davis was a reluctant one by Redskins' owner George Preston Marshall. Marshall for years had refused to sign any black players, and the Redskins were the last NFL team to do so. He was a notorious racist, and backed his decision by stating that he wanted to appeal to the NFL's southern market. The signing only came when Interior Secretary Stewart Udall issued an ultimatum to Marshall: sign a black player, or the Redskins' 30-year lease on the D.C. Stadium (now the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium) would be revoked. The stadium was property of the Washington city government. Marshall's response was to draft Davis. Davis refused to play for the Redskins, and demanded a trade. In turn a trade to Cleveland was engineered by Browns Coach Paul Brown shortly after Art Modell had purchased the team and without the knowledge or consent of Modell. This was standard operating procedure with the Browns from their inception in 1946, as Brown was the General Manager and Head Coach. [9][10] Davis chose to go to the Cleveland Brown where his classmate John Brown would be his roommate and Jim Brown, whom he admired, was already playing.

in this statement from wikkpedia it clearly states that the skins drafted him and he REFUSED TO play for them and paul brown engineered a trade

so perhaps you should learn a little history before calling me out

I think if you research that more dad you will find out Davis did not refuse to sign with Washington. I like Wiki but they aren't always right.

Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
Don't go on the patio.
Beware of the pool,
blue bottomless pool.
It leads you straight
right throught the gate
that opens on the pool.

You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.

Keep off the path, beware of the gate,
watch out for signs that say "hidden driveways".
Don't let the chlorine in your eyes
blind you to the awful surprise
that's waitin' for you at
the bottom of the bottomless blue blue blue pool.

You're livin in your own Private Idaho. Idaho.
You're out of control, the rivers that roll,
you fell into the water and down to Idaho.
Get out of that state,
get out of that state you're in.
You better beware.

You're living in your own Private Idaho.
You're living in your own Private Idaho.

Keep off the patio,
keep off the path.
The lawn may be green
but you better not be seen
walkin' through the gate that leads you down,
down to a pool fraught with danger
is a pool full of strangers.

You're living in your own Private Idaho,
where do I go from here to a better state than this.
Well, don't be blind to the big surprise
swimming round and round like the deadly hand
of a radium clock, at the bottom of the pool.

I-I-I-daho
I-I-I-daho

Get out of that state
Get out of that state
You're living in your own Private Idaho,
livin in your own Private.... Idaho

the vast majority of the research i did along with the story i heard growing up say he refused to play for the redskins because of the racist owner

i went to the bills brought up all their drafts and davis was not a pick

Wiki is the only place I saw he refused to sign. The Redskins first approached Cleveland about tradking for Bobby Mitchell before Davis was drafted.

Either way that story although an illustration of Preston Marshalls racism does not coincide with the current claims by others.
