You want to know what the biggest factor in getting John Boy Smith from BFE, Nebraska? Money!!! You bring in John Boy and it comes with financial support of the farm families. That is a big reason the walk on program was built to what it is.

This obviously is not a popular comment but I am not wrong.

In addition to what Big Red Said posted, I would say if some think Nebraska fans/coaches/players over-romanticize the walk-on program, maybe you can listen to what other coaches such as Jerry Moore of Appalachian State and Barry Alvarez of Wisconsin say about it. They both have said emphasizing walk-on tradition at their schools was crucial in their success as well.

and "You bring in John Boy and it comes with financial support of the farm families." I doubt farm families even make a dent in the booster ranks. The program Tom started where farmers can contribute part of their harvest to UNL is the closest this comes. Maybe you mean fan support but everyone in Nebraska going back a couple generations now have been fans.

You could say the walk-on has steadily increased the fanbase to include all of Nebraska though. Or at least helped. I can think of one high school I attended in Class C that has had a few walk-ons over the years who have played. Can't remember seeing a scholarship ever going to a player from there out of high school though.

I didn't mean that the farm families are "boosters of substance" but in a state of this size, any money is good money.

I wish I was good enough to walk-on for Nebraska

That's all I have to add to this here debate.

I do agree with HH on the subject of the walk-ons..............walk-ons are the ones working their asses off behind the scenes at practice and letting the scholarship players pound their faces into the dirt every day. And they keep letting them do it every day because they love Husker football...................I would do it if they would let me.

And then of course, walk-ons often do end up playing key roles in games as well.

And now that I've read a few of the other posts, I agree with them as well...........such as BRS's post above.

I am not saying they don't bust their ass and love the program.

So would they scholly players not bust their ass and love the program without all of the walk ons? ;)

I just don't think the scholly players (for the most part) bust their asses and love the program as much as the walk-ons do.

Now, I'm not saying that for all scholly players, because that would not be fair. But a person is bound to work harder for a team that they grew up loving with a passion.

The majority of our scholly players are going to come into Nebraska having grown up as fans of other teams.

The scholarship players do as well and if you got the impression that they don't from my earlier post that is an error on my part.

The Walk-ons however are working to prove themselves to earn a scholarship in waiting. They know they can be cut with little effort if they do not show they are there to make a contribution to the team.

For which, the scholarship players who many would not be in college without it, are mostly impressed with the sacrifices the walk-ons have made and make on a daily basis all the while trying to earn a spot on the team!
