So i generally like Gruden and have defended him on here frequently but...

Something that i don't think he's gotten enough criticism for (maybe ive just missed it) is not taking advantage of McVay while he was here enough.

Grudens a solid offensive mind but McVay is probably the best offensive coach in the league and extremely creative in attacking defenses. When you watch the Rams you really dont see an offense like Grudens at any point in the last 5 years. I think Gruden should have incorporated more of McVays ideas and been more creative.

Thoughts?

I think that you have some good points but what Gruden didn't have was Gurley, Donald and Wade Phillips. He sure does have an ability to find mismatches though.

McVay did good work here, and he's working wonders in LA. Hats off to him.

Honestly, the redskins were between a rock and a hard place with McVay. If they fired Gruden to promote mcVay, then it would have been "same old redskins:" firing coaches after a few years, never settled.

They had to let him test the head coaching waters, especially after how well the offense moved the ball with DeSean Jackson, Garcon, Reed, and primarily his work with Cousins.

In LA, McVay has the best offensive player on either team in Gurley carrying the rock, found a gem in the later rounds in Cooper Kupp, and pried underrated Brandon Cooks off the hands of the Pats for a decent price. He has the tools to run a power back based offense, and he's making it work - and then some!

Probably his BEST work on EITHER team so far is how he changed Goff into an above average passer.

It would have taken a huge pair by Snyder to fire Gruden and keep Mcvay. It looks like that would have been a good decision but that would have been a huge gamble on our part.

I think Gruden gets his fair share of criticism. Myself and many others on this board have questioned his ability to get the team up on a weekly basis, having them ready for week one, always running on first down, getting pass happy, being too conservative with a lead, mismanaging the clock, and constantly losing challenges.

The thing with Gruden is, his offense works and he's likable, which makes you want to root for him. You pair that with the Zorn and Spurrier era and it makes most fans want to keep Gruden just to remain competent and not become a laughingstock again.

I believe that what's at question here is analytics vs old school philosophies. With the modern rules so drastically effecting the passing game, analytics are fast becoming the norm. Gruden does have a pretty good offensive mindset but he comes from that "old school" line of coaches where some thought and gut determines what's next. On the other hand, Coaches like Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay are analytical gurus.

With these two guys you're going to get some big time offensive numbers in games because statistical matchups will determine where the advantages are on any given down and distance. Gruden knows the mismatches but sometimes you just scratch your head at the play called. It will be very interesting to see what kind of adjustments defenses will make to counter the rule changes, if it is at all possible.

Yes im sure gruden had a positive impact.

But mcvay is better and far more creative offensively. Mcvay didn't get all that from gruden because... we don't see it from gruden.

McVay seems to have take the best from people he worked for. He uses Shanahan's zone blocking a fair amount.

It was a work of art how he managed to get Vikings LBer lined up on two WRs and Gurley. Film study and game planning.

You are correct coach, head to head it is Gruden 1 to McVay's 0

However as a HC it is:
McVay 15-5
Gruden 30-36-1

Not to close there.

Just give the facepalms that you get facepalms. Then they can give your facepalms, return facepalms and you can give the facepalms of your facepalms, more facepalms. :pound:

I like how McVay goes no huddle. I haven't really seen us do that since he left. Could be wrong.

Our no huddle was a habitual clusterfuck. Rarely if ever ran 2 plays in row, wasted time outs. We were/are until proven otherwise a bad team on both sides of the ball in the 2 minute drill.

114 rushes and 134 passes in 4 games for the Rams eh. That's a pretty balanced mix of 28.5 carries a game and 33.5 passes a game. Would've been nice to have seen what that balance would've done for the Skins. As opposed to McVay trying to make KC Air Cousins

Actually that's on Kirk. Kirk came to Sean and begged him to let him air it out. That conversation was captured on NFL miced up.
