I got this from another board. Great blog...
Bowl fiasco
ANOTHER GREAT BLOG ABOUT THIS BOWL DEBACLE
Kind of apropos, isn’t it? A season that felt like one giant letdown gets a bowl game that sits like one, too. - Sean Keeler, Des Moines Register
And, to you Nebraska, I got you a real nice parting gift. How does a second straight trip to the Holiday Bowl against a team you already blasted by 35 points (this year) sound? Sounds like another item to add to the list of reasons why the Big XII is a national laughingstock. The Huskers are leaving for the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska has already won, and Nebraska will have the last laugh despite the laughter that is currently going on. But…you just don’t do business this way.
But while Beebe and his minions in Dallas are chuckling over this recent development, high-fiving each other while toasting their deed with Diet Dr. Peppers as they get a one-up on NU, they might try and consider what public relations nightmare they are creating for themselves. - John Bishop, KLIN Radio
Until last night this conspiracy to make Nebraska bleed on their way out the door was just something drawn up by delusional Husker fans. Good luck explaining this one away, though, Dan. Missouri, a team that was passed over a year ago by these same Insight officials for Iowa State, was picked over a school that is traditionally known for being one of the best traveling fan bases in the nation. Now, the Insight officials are doing their best to validate the decision, but who is really buying it?
The truth is that the Insight and Fiesta officials have a bond with the Big XII. Their job is to keep that conference happy. When Dan Beebe and other Big XII officials call and strong arm them and say take Missouri over Nebraska, they do it. But here’s where the bad business comes in. Iowa against Nebraska is a dream game for any bowl that can get it. I mentioned Nebraska is well known for traveling well? Iowa is too. And when you combine that they will be playing each other you can times that by two.
And like I said before, whoever was in charge of this decision shouldn't have a freakin job tomorrow, somebody just cost the city of Phoenix thousands if not millions of dollars.
This matchup could have drawn more people than the Fiesta Bowl with UConn there. - hawkeyescott, Random Iowa Message Board
Nail on the head, hawkeyescott. Nail on the head. And hawkeyescott isn’t the only Hawkeye fan upset about this one. You saw what Sean Keeler wrote. Read any Hawkeye message board right now, and you see a wave of disappointment. Sure, they’d love to have the chance to take some frustrations out on Missouri after they backed out of a regular season contract a few years ago. But not at the expense of a lost chance to play Nebraska. So, Hawkeye fans aren’t happy.
And if Hawkeye fans aren’t happy then you can just imagine how the Holiday Bowl officials feel. Of course, when the Holiday Bowl lowered their payout they probably knew Dan Beebe would do them like he’s done Nebraska. And, boy did he. The Holiday Bowl had nowhere else to go. They had to take Washington as the only remaining PAC 10 team eligible for a bowl game, and with the backdoor deals done in the Texas Bowl and the Pinstripe Bowl BEFORE last night they had to take Nebraska too.
The cities in the desert can’t be happy right now. As hawkeyescott pointed out, their decision to choose Missouri cost those cities a lot of money. Nebraska and Iowa fans would sell out the stadium, they’d sell out all the hotels around the desert, and they’d drink and eat that place dry. Instead, they get Missouri. A team Nebraska routed, and a school that doesn’t travel well. Enjoy that.
In the end, Beebe and the Big XII couldn’t stomach what might have been a four-hour infomercial on the new and improved Big Ten Conference. The Big XII might feel that it was a good business move for them, but the Insight Bowl will remember this. The Holiday Bowl will remember this too. They made the decision to railroad an Iowa-Nebraska game in order to keep Missouri happy? Really?
Oh well, it’s why Nebraska is leaving the Big XII. It’s why the Big Ten Conference is seen as the standard in how to run a conference, and the Big XII is seen as how NOT to run a conference. It’s why the Insight Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, and the people of Arizona won’t forget this. Beebe and the rest of the Big XII Conference might be laughing now, but it’s why Nebraska will be laughing for the rest of eternity.
