They should've never given the refs a chance to make that call, that turnover was terrible leading up to it. That being said, there was a zero % chance that ball was going in, I don't like the call. At all.

Good game. Alford really shot lights out. Took advantage of his height over Nic Moore.

That was the right call, what a fucking idiot. Fuck you SMU, literally gave away a point for my pool

Yep...an absolute "Not top ten" lock. One of the most boneheaded plays imaginable. I understand you want to get that if you know its an airball, but you have to be sure it's not about to hit rim.

I hate the Alfords, but I've seen it six or seven times. At minimum, the ball was gonna go over the rim. It almost certainly would have hit it. Either way, it's a goaltend and D-Bag Sr. and Jr. get the win.

The ball is going to hit the rim (albeit barely). The defender touches the ball before it can.

Clear goaltending.

SMU player was stupid for even having his hand there. SMU shouldnt have been in situation either if hadn't choked down the stretch.

Here's the official rule via wikipedia...

In basketball, goaltending is the violation of interfering with the ball when it is on its way to the basket and it is (a) in its downward flight, (b) entirely above the rim and has the possibility of entering the basket, and (c) not touching the rim.

It was in a downright flight, but it had no chance of going in the basket. None what so ever.

Why is it the most boneheaded play imaginable? Houston lost the National Championship because Hakeem Olajuwon did NOT make that play.

From the NCAA rule book:

Violations- Goaltending. (Rule 9-17.5). When the ball contacts the backboard and any part of the ball is above the rim on a field goal attempt, it is considered to be on its downward flight. In such case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player as long as it has a possibility of entering the basket.

So if the ball was going to hit the front of the rim but clearly not go in, it's not a goaltend? I don't think that's right, Wikipedia or not. I always thought (b) was "above the rim and has the possibility of entering the basket or making contact with the rim."

I'd love to see the official NCAA rule, but I think you have to pay for it now.

IMO, if a ball has a chance at contacting the rim... it has a chance at going in.

It might be 1 in a thousand... but we've all seen bad bricks take crazy bounces before.

that doesn't sound right because weird things happen when the ball hits the rim. the chances of that thing going in are nearly impossible but it is still possible

reminds me of Washington/unc a few yrs back in the tourney. unc got away with it though

Except for the fact that in the UNC game it was a two point shot at the buzzer of a three point game. So, a goaltend isn't relevant.

That is true most of the time, but not in this case. The rules of physics would have to cease for that ball to it off of the rim and go in. It was garbage.
