Oh man I wish Oliver would sign elsewhere. He is worth so much more to us on another team.

If we offered him arbitration he'd probably take it. he's not getting more than a 1 year deal anyways. I'd love to offer him arb and then have him go somewhere else though.

The Rangers announced that they exercised their 2012 option for Yoshinori Tateyama (Twitter link). The right-hander will earn a $1MM salary in 2012.

Tateyama, 35, debuted in the Major Leagues in 2011, pitching 44 innings of relief for the Rangers. He posted a 4.50 ERA with 8.8 K/9, 2.3 BB/9, a 38.7% ground ball rate and an average fastball velocity of just 86.9 mph.

i can see that you are obsessed with getting Shields and obviously are willing to give up just about anything to get him, irregardless of how much damage it ultimately does to the team

How so? Reyes would be a huge upgrade over Andrus. We only had 1 RBI come out of the #2 spot the entire playoffs, that was a real killer. Having someone to fill that hole would be more beneficial than having a Pujols or Fielder at this point, and would free up Elvis as trade bait to a team that has a glaring need at SS. Also with CC re-signing with NYY, that makes the need for the trade that much greater. I'm not obsessed with Shields, I don't think he's the best pitcher in the league, but I think he's the most attainable possible ace via trade. Your options are just re-signing CJ, or signing Darvish. Buehrle or Oswalt would be mistakes. Just seems like smart baseball to me. Signing Reyes and trading for Shields would be like getting two birds stoned at once.

i don't think TB is going to trade Shields and if they do they won't be looking for infielders or outfielders as the #1 player offered. TB will be looking for top pitching prospect as the centerpiece of any offer. they would probably be looking for a package of Martin Perez, Neil Ramirez and at least 2 additional prospects that will include another pitcher & perhaps a prospect like Profar or Ott

I think you're overselling how much it would take for them to get rid of Shields. They believe they have the best pitchers in their own farm system and that's what has led them to making moves such as scrapping their entire bullpen after the 2010 season. I know they're really high on Moore and rightfully so. Plus they still have Price so it's not like you're asking them to give up their only good pitcher. They're not worried about pitching, they need offense and that is why Shields is attainable for us.

"With such little starting pitching available via free agency, it's possible that teams will do what the Brewers did last winter -- trading for Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum.

Shields
Tampa Bay's James Shields, who had a terrific 2011 season, might not be affordable any longer for the Rays. If so, he will draw a lot of attention in the trade market." ESPN

and i think you're underestimating what it will take to get him. just because ESPN says that TB may not be able to afford him doesn't mean that they are going to give him away. TB will expect top talent in return

Before we sell the farm for Shields, there are other pitchers I would check and see if were available. I'd look at Josh Johnson first. His price might be a little lower with his injury.
