I’m likely giving Trump way too much credit here but say the JCOS and NSC are both conclusively telling him the drone was in int’l waters and this was indeed a hostile act, one that Iran took credit for almost immediately and ties in to recent conduct in the area. Almost any president would be encouraged and have a plan drawn up to attack in retaliation, and such an attack would accomplish absolutely nothing – just like his Syria strike.

If he got all this, thought it over and scrubbed it this was probably the best play – it shows he isn’t a warmonger (I know what we all think but it’s worth mentioning that his election had a lot to do with non-interventionism), it shows that he does have control over the more hawkish members of his administration and the military and it could open up a channel of, If not negotiation, at least understanding that the US isn’t in some rush to go to war.

Or he just called fucking Hannity and took his advice. Probably that.
