  • John Keim, ESPN Staff Writer
RICHMOND, Va. -- Highlights and observations from the Redskins' workout Wednesday (not a full-pads day, but they’re still going full speed):

  • Quarterback Robert Griffin III did not have his best day: there were moments good and bad. He did not look as decisive as he had been before the one-day break or as sharp. He failed to connect on a deep pass to Pierre Garcon (the play took a while and Griffin probably would have been sacked on the play). Griffin also lost one pass as he stepped up in the pocket and appeared to pump-fake; the ball squirted out of his hands.

  • He did hit Garcon later in a four-minute drill; the ball was slightly underthrown but it was completed. He did connect with DeSean Jackson on one play-action five-step drop. The safeties expected Jackson to go deep, but with the linebackers sucked up, Jackson ran the safeties off and stopped for a wide-open completion. Add that sort of route to the list of things Jackson can do; defenses must honor the deep ball with him off play-action. He’ll need to run this sort of route on occasion to keep them honest.

Chris Culliver was clearly disappointed when Griffin didn’t challenge him versus Andre Roberts. He smothered Roberts on the route, so Griffin went elsewhere prompting Culliver to say, “Come on, 3! Come on, 3!” To which Griffin said, “I’m not coming over there, Culliver!” Later in practice, Culliver broke up a pass to Roberts. He also chided Griffin another time telling him to, “Throw the ball, 3!”
  • Tight end Jordan Reed makes athletic catches quite a bit and did so twice Wednesday. In a one-on-one drill, he cut inside the defender and, with the ball thrown behind him, he reached back and caught the ball. Later in the day, Reed reached behind for a one-handed catch in seven-on-seven work. Also liked how Reed extended his arms to catch another pass. I’ll have more on him Thursday and his quest to stay healthy this season (what he changed to try and help).

  • Posted a video of this on my Facebook account, but running back Trey Williams shook free from linebacker Perry Riley in a one-on-one drill. Took him out and after Riley went hard with him, Williams cut back inside for a wide-open catch. The Redskins like him, but Williams has been working behind Chris Thompson throughout camp -- as you would expect. Thompson’s big question remains durability.

  • Saw linebacker Preston Smith make a play Wednesday; have not seen a lot of that this camp (or in the spring). Smith looped to the inside and his size bothered Colt McCoy into an errant pass. Smith, starting on the left side, came free up the middle.

  • Have said this before, but will do so again: I like the way receiver Ryan Grantworks back to the ball. Does it probably as well as any of the receivers.

  • Nose tackle Terrance Knighton sat out practice with an illness; safety Jeron Johnson missed with a hamstring injury. Running back Matt Jones (knee) participated in individual drills.

  • Wrote about Brandon Scherff going to right guard in full-team work today; that’s a spot I always liked him at -- excellent power.

  • Linebacker Will Compton ran a blitz that, it appeared, Tom Compton failed to pick up. Compton would have leveled McCoy. For what it’s worth, McCoy did a nice job today; hit one pass to Grant on an out in which he led him to the spot. In the four-minute work, McCoy hit rookie Evan Spencer on a deep out; good, quick hands by Spencer on the catch.

  • The field goal tally today: Kai Forbath made one from 42 yards, but also missed one from 42 and another from 50. On the last one, end Chris Bakerrode him before the attempt, saying out loud, “He hasn’t made one today!” Forbath was not pleased afterward as Baker walked over to him. Forbath went the other way.

  • Today’s kick return order: Andre Roberts, Jamison Crowder, Chris Thompson, Rashad Ross and Trey Williams.

Observations from Day 7 of Redskins training camp - The Washington Post

moses did well . the future could be moses at RT sherf at RG
Little more on the developing and shuffling Oline

John Keim, ESPN Staff Writer

RICHMOND, Va. – The Redskins drafted Brandon Scherff fifth overall to play right tackle, but that doesn’t mean they won’t switch him to another position – if that makes the line better.

Scherff has worked exclusively with the first line at right tackle during full-team work, until Wednesday when he took snaps at right guard with Morgan Moses at right tackle (the Redskins were in shells, not shoulder pads). Moses handled all the first team work at tackle and Scherff took all the snaps at right guard. Spencer Long, who has been working with the first offense at right guard, handled that position with the second group.

Moses is off to a good start in camp, coming off a Lisfranc injury last season. The Redskins still don’t consider him 100 percent, but they do want to see how he looked with the first offense. They have tried almost all the players at another spot along the line, prepping for emergency contingencies and in some cases to see what spot suits a player best. Tom Compton has taken snaps in full-team work at both right guard (with the second offense) and right tackle (with the third). Long has taken reps at left guard, though not in full-team drills.

“We’re still sorting things out,” Redskins line coach Bill Callahan said. “Nothing’s settled.”

That’s a theme throughout the organization. The Redskins say they just want the best five on the field and won’t keep Scherff at right tackle if

the line is better with him at guard and Moses at tackle. But they do like Long. Both Long and Scherff have had a tougher time adjusting to pass protection.

“I like his work ethic,” Callahan said of Long, “and I like the way he plays with power. He’s strong and really stout at the point of attack.”

Moses has done a better job this summer of staying low and playing with more balance and power. Scherff has struggled in one-on-one pass protection drills, particularly vs. linebacker Ryan Kerrigan.

It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds and if it was just an experimentation (that’s one thing I was told) or if this continues throughout camp.
