Overheard at camp: A lot of talking, thanks to being in pads for the first time. Corner Josh Norman ended one series with a hard pop on running back Samaje Perine, prompting D.J. Swearinger to shout, "Hey! That's what you wanted!" After a successful pass play, tight end Niles Paul yelled out to the D, "Why y'all so quiet!" And quarterback Kirk Cousins chimed in, "What he said!"

Rookie report: Second-round linebacker Ryan Anderson showed his ability to play with leverage. On one play vs. fellow rookie, tight end Jeremy Sprinkle, Anderson controlled him at the line, found the ball and moved Sprinkle out of the way. Anderson forced the run inside to awaiting defenders.

Best play of the day: Receiver Josh Doctson fooled corner Josh Norman to break wide open for a long touchdown catch. But that wasn't as impressive as Doctson's one-handed grab over corner Dashaun Phillips in a one-on-one drill. Doctson jumped and reached back over Phillips and caught the pass with his right hand.

great first week for this guy . hope he can make the jump

--The Redskins ended practice in the two-minute drill situation, as the offense was placed at its own 30-yard line with 1:30 left on the clock to drive down field for a game-winning field goal. The first-team offense marched 50 yards down the field in six plays (Cousins started 4-for-4 before a spike), to set up a Dustin Hopkins 47-yard field goal attempt. While Hopkins’ attempt clanked off the left post, Cousins was able to maneuver the unit down the field quickly.

Sounds familiar .... he had no competition. I am not happy about that.

Redskins observations, July 29: Redskins get physical as pads come on
597cfeee532cd.image.jpg

Washington Redskins Robert Davis(19) run a drill with Joshua Holsey(20) during the Redskins training camp in Richmond, Va. on Saturday, July 29, 2017.

Overnight rains soaked the fields on Saturday morning, but the skies cleared in time for the Washington Redskins to get their afternoon practice in. Unfortunately, the field closest to the fans hadn't fully drained yet, so the most competitive practice of camp was mostly conducted away from spectators, on the far field.

Still, the show went on. Some observations:

--After an underwhelming spring and summer, receiver Josh Doctson has had a fantastic training camp. Doctson has made a number of tough catches all week, and is living up to his pre-draft potential for the first time since arriving in Washington.

--The pads were on for the first time at this camp, and the first drill of the day featured the linebackers hitting the running backs. The drills were mostly about technique, but linebacker Trent Murphy delivered a handful of big hits, producing some loud pops to the delight of his teammates.

--When the offensive and defensive lines were paired, one observation remained a constant from past years: Left tackle Trent Williams is dominant, and it was tough for any defender to move him during the session.

--Backup left guard Arie Kouandjio was struggling in his one-on-one matchups, and time could be ticking for the Alabama grad to make an impact and secure a future in the league. In one drill, Kouandjio was pushed to the ground by Matt Ioannidis.

--There was an extended scrimmage time, and Bashaud Breeland was extra chatty - at one point, he grabbed the ball away from Terrelle Pryor after a catch. Later, after some offensive success, Niles Paul chirped back, "Why are y'all so quiet over there?"

--Vernon Davis dropped a hard-thrown third-and-6 pass from Colt McCoy that hit him in the numbers.

--Every time Matt Jones gets a carry, the entire defense swarms to the ball to try to create a fumble. They've done that for the last two years as well, though it's yet to produce on-field results during games.

--There's plenty of camp left, as well as the preseason games, but Nate Sudfeld has been struggling. I wanted to see more from him in Year 2, instead he's still looking like a rookie.

--A bizarre day for kicker Dustin Hopkins started when he missed a 48-yard field goal off the left post. Hopkins then converted three consecutive kicks from 44 yards out. He was moved back to 48, and hit the left post again, then missed a third try. Finally, from 50 yards out, he converted, ending the practice.

--Old Dominion's Zach Pascal had the catch of the day, securing a leaping catch and landing in time to make sure he was inbounds. He and Robert Davis have both impressed as rookie receivers at this camp.

Keith Marshall's injury the first major loss of camp

Saturday's practice brought with it the first major injury of training camp, as running back Keith Marshall had to be carted off with a knee injury.

Marshall's right knee was extended by a defender closing in to make a tackle. Marshall was scheduled for further evaluation on Saturday evening.

Cornerback Bashaud Breeland also left practice early, with cramps in his leg. He remained on the field to watch the end of the session.

Receiver Jamison Crowder missed the session with a hamstring injury, but the move to sit him was described as precautionary. Defensive lineman Anthony Lanier also missed the workout with knee inflammation.

Tight end Derek Carrier sat out after twisting his ankle earlier in the week, but coach Jay Gruden said he'd be back in a day or two. Receiver Maurice Harris could miss as much as a week with knee soreness.

The Redskins also made a roster move, cutting defensive back Lou Young and adding Jeremiah McKinnon.
