But we in the media would be naïve, stupid and stubborn to think we’re the only ones who can and will be on top of breaking news. And so that brings us to another rumor involving the Giants and Rivers that popped up on a forum called “Big Blue Huddle” last night. A poster there said a source told him the team is close to acquiring the Cincinnati Bengals linebacker and is “pretty sure … this is going down.”

Someone alerted me to the post last night and I did some checking. If this one is out of left field and completely bogus, no one has told me that yet. In fact, I get the impression the Huddle’s sleuth is hot on the trail of this one. As I said on Twitter, there might be some fire behind this smoke.

Adding to my suspicions is the fact Rivers is in the area right now. The former USC standout, whom the Bengals selected ninth overall in 2008, tweeted to someone Tuesday night he’s “stopping in NYC” on his way back from a trip to France and Italy. Of course, if you follow his timeline, you’ll see he stopped here on the way out as well.

Rumors abound of potential Giants trade for Cincinnati Bengals' Keith Rivers | NJ.com

Hmmm...Rivers is in the final year of his contract that was front loaded. Base salary this year of $2.16 million.

Make it happen.

I read that too and the funny thing is I was sure they would try him at MLB while Rey serves his probable 4 game suspension. If they do get rid of Rivers it may confirm something I was thinking about last night that I was going to post. The Bengals are interested in a LB from Alabama and its not Courtney Upshaw but is in fact Dont'a Hightower who's stock has been steadily rising as of late. I'm coming out with a new mock and it will include Cordy Glenn @17 and Dont'a Hightower @21.

Looks like a 5th rounder this year for Rivers.

If this comes to pass, that would be 3 picks in the 5th round for the Bengals. Damn.

The Bengals last few 5th round picks (we now have 3 this year): Robert Sands, Otis Hudson, Kevin Huber, Jason Shirley, Jeff Rowe, AJ Nicholson, Adam Kleft, Maurice Mann, Khalid Abdullah, Victor Lejva, Robert Bean, etc...I see no way this can go wrong.

We have too many draft picks. Hopefully we use some of these picks to either move up a few spots in one round or to pick up an underperforming veteran.

BTW -- Robert Sands catches the ball hard and Otis Hudson is a road-grader. Vance is just a hater.

Just gives them more chances to get it right with one of them at least. Or (heaven forbid) package some of them to move up!

It also rids them of a player they totally whiffed on...in the top ten of the '08 Draft. Hated the pick that day. Hated it.

I didn't hate the pick, but wasn't a fan either. It makes it worse that the next pick was Jerod Mayo.

If you look at that draft there weren't many guys in the top half that turned out to be any good. We picked Rivers by default..... It's easy to say now that we should have selected Mayo, but Rivers was rated higher by almost all of the talking heads (and that's where we get most of our draft reports from anyway).

If we picked a few spots earlier we probably would have ended up with Gholston (terrible) or Harvey (now employed by us). It was just a bad year.

But yes..... Keith Rivers stinks and I'm glad he'll be gone.

In the past 4 seasons Keith Rivers has totaled 1,325 defensive snaps.

Chicago's Lance Briggs played 1,116 last year alone.

That's because Briggs is a stud. Rivers is a dud.
