Seriously its a joke.

Geno Smith today had these numbers.

8/19 115 yards 0 TD 0 INT 62 rating

It wasn't a great game, but he had no WRs today and at least he didn't turn the ball over. But they gave him a 14 total QBR which means he had a TERRIBLE game.

Meanwhile, Terrelle Pryor vs the Steelers had a game with these numbers

10/19 88 yards 0 TD 2 INT 26 QB rating.

he had a 96 total QBR for that game, so they said he played an unbelievably amazing game.

Wow! Your team just beat the Saints. Why do you care about Geno's Total QBR? Gotta admit, however, that you cite a good example of how lame that stat is.

Its just something I've been following for some time now. Watching how uneven and terribly flawed this ESPN created stat is.

For some reason that Pryor game is better than a 5 TD performance by Drew Brees as well.

Statistics use measurable data. Imaginary numbers based on subjectivity make it not a statistic.

Call it what you want but it is not a statistic.

C. Newton 23/37 249 6.7 1 2 1-7 70.5 68.4

Seems about right. The INTs were particularly bad ones (one on the ATL 1, the other in the EZ). What the numbers can't show were the numerous overthrows to open receivers.

either way its worthless. ESPN promoted this and I gave it a chance, but its just terrible and I can't take it seriously anymore.

Does the formula involve a negative square root or something?

It's a funky rating for sure. I don't value it all that much.

QBR incorporates running which is why running qbs tend to have higher QBR ratings. Still isn't really a stat because no one really knows how it is created. Passer rating is a statistic. QBR isn't.

Numbers people need to occupy their time creating formulas and stuff, that is what they do.

Formulas are great. It is when they add in random numbers decided by "experts" that are highly prone to bias that the issue comes from.

Pryor rushed for nearly 100 yards and a 9+ yard per carry. Passed for more than twice as many yards as Smith

To be sure, I don't think anyone gives much credit to immediate after-the-fact numbers such as the new QBR rating proposed by ESPN or whomever it was. Those type of statistics lack the element of considering long-term trends that actually consider a large amount of data that allows more worthy conclusions.

I think they use metrics based upon situations which lend themselves to a lot of subjectivity. The rankings I've seen that assess it over a long period of time seem pretty solid, though.

It is a statistic, its just not a good one... Using imaginary numbers as data still creates a statistic(mathematically)... If i made a random series of numbers and used it as my data, then created a statistic with that data then the statistic would still be a statistic...
