The words "great recruiting classes" and "best recruiting classes ever" have been thrown around this board and it is a topic of discussion when talking about replacing depth. This is not an attack on Stew, but it should be a eye opener that those highly rated classes were really not that good for WVU.....he did find some gems for sure and for that he should be commended...but as far as depth these were horrible classes for the future of our program.

2009 22nd ranked class
3 star Jerrand Hunter who?
2 star Will Clarke solid
2 star Taige Redman 2 year special teams
3 star Pat Miller ouch
3 star Jonathan Scott who?
2 star Terrance Moore who?
3 star Broderick Jenkins not very good-quit
5 star Tavon Austin awesome
3 star Stedman Bailey awesome(in DH's offense)
4 star Geno Smith stat wise best QB in WVU history
3 star Darwin Cook solid
2 star Curtis Feigt DE converted to RT
2 star Nick Kindler back up
2 star Terence Garvin solid starter
3 star Ryan Spikes who?
2 star Pat Edger jack of all trades master of none
3 star Daquan Hargrett quit
3 star Shawn Alston good when healthy, fumbles hurt
3 star Jordan weingart who?
3 star Cole Bowers quit after one season
4 star Dominik Davenport quit in spring ball
4 star Deon Long played pretty well for Maryland
3 star Branko Busick Jail
4 star Chris Snook injuries ended his career, never played
4 star Logan Heastie never played
26 players 12 never played a snap for WVU, 3 great players 4 solid, rest career back ups

2010 ranked 30th overall
4 star Ivan McCartney quit came back....not that good
3 star Travis Bell starter
3 star Qudral Forte who?
2 star Avery Williams 2nd or 3rd teamer
2 sar Dante Chambers who?
5 star Bruce Irvin Awesome
2 star Jewone Snow career back up injured
2 star Ishmel Banks starter
3 star Doug Rigg solid
3 star Troy Gloster quit
3 star Quantivias Leslie Who?
3 star Trevor Demko rarely plays
3 star Wes Tonkery special teams guy
3 star Barry Brunetti quit
4 star Jeremy Johnson quit
3 star Mike Dorsey quit
3 star Trey Johnson quit
3 star Marquise Wallace never qualified
3 star Benji Kemoeatu never qualified
4 star Quinton Spain solid
4 star Deon Long 2nd year with us quit during practice
21 players, 11 never played for WVU. 3 players who have contributed.

Total 47 players, 23 never having played at WVU 48% of players recruited in a two year span never played. I am not sure how this would compare to other schools but I have to believe it would be pretty high.

Look I am sick of the Stew vs DH arguement and I did not post this to make anyone look bad or good, but the reality is with whoever was our coach our depth and talent was going to struggle. This is a legit arguement as to why we are hurting so bad when facing better teams that do not have the depth issues we have. This is not the root to all of our issues, but it has definitly not helped. :noidea:
Sorry if any errors typing this out at work.

Appreciate the research you did, DC. I know that many have left or did not play. That is how it is at most schools, we've already had some guys leave this year for whatever reason, and it is a valid knock on our former coach that he did not fill his classes, going for quality over numbers, wanting to foster the walk on program. BUT the cupboard was far from bare as some have claimed. I would be interested to see the same info for a longer term, and at other schools.

I know this happens at other schools for sure, but I would be very shocked if it was at a 48% clip...attrition rates I would imagine are 15% or smaller...just a guess going to see if i can find it.

I will do a little research this evening when I get home, but I read on another WWW site today that the WVU 29 man recruiting class from last year has already lost ten guys. Do any of you guys know?

Doesn't matter which side of the BS/DH argument you find yourself on, the bottom line is the recruiting suffered just before the move then again in transition ( as does every program that makes a change at first) and I'm sure the "WVU will be stuck in the BigEast" card was played on the recruiting trail with some sucess as well. Moving forward we need as much stability with our coaches and staff as possible ( minus JFnD) imo to try n right that ship. DH and crew are doing a solid job so far at most positions but as Slaton mentioned, the Bedenbaugh move hurt but hopefully Crook is satisfied here and if he does a good job for us we can nail him down for the future.

It's probably representative of the rates for a time period of coaching change. It's pretty common for the house to get cleaned out when a new guy comes in.

This was two years before DH even came , of these guys never even came here, did not have much to do with coach change.

And when was it announced that Stewart was being fired? During the 2010 season. Some of those signees would have redshirted the 09 season so they would still be freshman. But apparently no one could ever possibly leave school after their freshman or sophomore seasons..

I see what your saying, but 48 %, most of those guys were jrs, but more to the point look how many never made it to campus....like I said not a DH vs Stew issue, just that for our two highest rated classes a lot of the highest rated guys never played for WVU. I found some items about some other schools so i will post more later on.

Thanks DC for providing a true black and white look at the situation. Loved the commentary!

It seems there is a significant part of our fan base that doesn't want to look at the reality of our situation. There is a reason WVU has the 8th youngest football team in college this year.

Here is one of the better chart I found....that first year is when the SEC gave more schollys than they had slots....but look at the normal years. Even if you count the first one, our 48% tops all of these for any two year span and more than their 4 year span.

Dad I need to compare the list for the 10 players leaving, just have not had time to do it. I have the class just not sure who has left and who is still on the roster.

2011 Class ranked 54th...so this would be when DH(Dec 16th) came on as OC and Stew was still here

2 star Marquis Lucas starting LG
3 star Andrew Buie one great game, quit
3 star Terrell Chesnut started as frosh now 2nd or 3rd team
2 star Russell Haughton James back up
2 star Dustin Garrison great frosh year, hurt hasn't been the same
2 star Brandon Jackson OL 340 lbs should be a DT can;t get on field
2 star Isiah Bruce 1st or 2nd in Big 12 in tackles as frosh I believe
2 star Paul Millard who knows?
3 star Shaq Rowell IMO one of the better NT in Big 12
3 star Josh Francis did not live up to hype, but did start--graduated
3 star KJ Myers backup
3 star Shaquille Petteway good specials teams hurt
3 star Ben Bradley who?
3 star Justin Jonson never qualified
3 star Jared Barber solid
3 star Nick Kwiatkoski turning into a beast
3 star Dante Campbell still waiting??
2 star Brain Athey quit during first camp
3 star Kyle Rose solid player getting better
3 star Vernard Roberts quit
3 star Vance Roberts quit package deal with brother
3 star Cody Clay decent blocking FB

22 total, 6(27%) quit or never qualified with Buie actually contributing. Francis graduated. Some solid starters coming from this class more of defensive side of ball. Garrison showed a lot his frosh year but then was hurt before bowl game. 5 starters....

This is the year we should have seen a lot of turnover because of a coaching change.

Meanwhile only 6 of these guys are gone. It makes me wonder how much BS was involved in this class now, especially since DH was hired in... was it December '10? I don't think he started until January though.

I am looking, I think it was the Charleston newspaper that said 2012 29 signed 9 gone, I just looked up the roster from WVU stats, and compared it to Rivals list of our 2012 class, and indeed there ARE nine names on the Rivals list who are not on the current roster.

So that would be 29% over that two year period 51 total 15 leaving.

Spain is the only OL guy on those lists who is a 4 star recruit. All the rest are 2 star guys including our starters. That really explains the biggest weakness on our team.
