Went homer on this one. Posada has played more games at catcher than Mauer has played total.

Went homer on this one. Posada has played more games at catcher than Mauer has played total.

Only problem with this logic though is that Mauer still has better defensive metrics as a catcher as posada... So I don't think it matters how long they were catcher...

But to me it is defense vs offense... Posada was better offensively, while Mauer was better defensively...

Usually with catcher I will go defense first, especially when close in offense... But I am having a hard time voting against one of my favorite Yankees... So I will vote homer, for only homer reasons...

Debatable.

This is actually much closer than I was expecting. Posada was no joke.

First, I am only looking at '95 - '10 for Posada and '04 - '13 for Mauer.

Mauer was a defensive stud, but is already done with his catching career. That means he had a total of 10 years behind the dish.

Posada had a longer catching career (14 season of at least 50 games), and MUCH more postseason experience (although his numbers are not that exceptional)

Offensively...

Posada had 7 120+ OPS+ seasons; Mauer had 6 (with one season at 118)
Posada finished top 10 in the MVP voting twice; Mauer finished top 10 four times, while winning it in '09.

I don't ever remember Posada being generally regarded as the best catcher in the game at any time in his career while Mauer was considered the best for a good chunk of his.

I am going with Mauer in a very close one. I can't fault Yankee fans for going Posada in this one. I actually hardly call it a "homer" pick.

Posada was a better power hitter, while Mauer was better at getting on base.

Mauer's had six seasons with a top 10 OPS+. Posada had two. Comparing their offensive stats as catchers:
Mauer (04-13): .323/.405/.468, 135 OPS+, 44.2 WAR in 1178 games (6.2 per 650 PA)
Posada (95-10): .275/.377/.479, 123 OPS+, 43,1 WAR in 1714 games (4.6 per 650 PA)

Both of them are two of the better hitting catchers of all-time. Posada deserves a bit of credit for lasting longer behind the plate, but I think Mauer's defensive value and baserunning put him ahead. Posada was a horrible baserunner, even by catcher standards.
