Banks was only a SS for 8 seasons vs Ripkins 15. However, Banks was soooo much better during his run...

130 OPS+: Banks - 6; Ripkin - 3
140 OPS+: Banks - 5; Ripkin - 3
150 OPS+: Banks - 2; Ripkin - 1
160 OPS+: Banks - 0; Ripkin - 1 (162)

Ripkin, while I believe was a deserving first-ballot HOFer, is still slightly over-rated. Banks was a monster at the position, though. And 8 years is not just a short vacation.

Close, but I gotta go with Banks here.

Ripken's defense is way underrated. Also had a career OPS+ of 117 at shortstop (in 10329 PA).

Banks' 54-61 stretch is probably better than Ripken's best stretch (84-91?), but there's something to be said for having about twice as many plate appearances at the position.

Ripken's defense is way underrated. And a career 117 OPS+ with just under 13000 PA is pretty damn good (117 OPS+ in his time at shortstop).

Might be my hate of the Orioles, but I always thought Ripkens defense was overrated. I always thought he was an extremely intelligent player that studied the opposing batters and positioned himself greatly. But if you hit away from where he positioned himself he couldn't go get it.

this is harder than i thought it would be... I tend to avoid both players in the mocks we do... But always understood that they both are great...

Power- banks(not close)
walks- Ripkin(not close) but not a strength by either
BA- Ripkin(close)
speed- banks(very close) but not a strength
defense- Ripkin(close)
positional longevity- Ripken(not close)
career longevity- Ripken(not close)

Basically the only place Banks was better was in the power department... although that is a major part of baseball, i don't think it was enough of an advantage to compensate for being worse at EVERY other aspect...

But if it were that easy more batters/teams would have done it, no?

I figure what matters is getting the outs. Doesn't really matter too much what method you use to do it.

Wow I am Shocked by the voting here... I do have both players in my over-rated list, but still I would have thought this vote would be much closer and a slight edge to Ripken... Guess there is a lot of ripken hate here...
