Mays-Career=18.1, Best=2.1, seasons 1 or better=10, seasons over 0=17

Post season- Mays wins(NOT A STRENGTH FOR EITHER)

I give the win to Mays, He was significantly better defensively, was a better power hitter, and was better at getting a walk... Cobb was really only better at BA... And it wasn't significant enough...

Another 1 and 1A matchup, IMO. Cobb played through the dead ball era, but his approach to hitting wouldn't have led to a ton of home runs anyway. If Mays had no speed, this is closer because Cobb would have huge edges in two categories (AVG and SB). But Mays could swipe a base. Not batting in the 1 or 2 hole cost him many SB opportunities. And with the XBH, home runs and defense at a premium defensive position, I give the vote to the more complete player, Mays.

I'm having a hard time even comprehending Ty Cobb. Guy was hitting .380-.400 on a regular basis and stealing 50-100 bases and managing the team without getting any MVP votes. He has this major rep of hating everyone but his team never won anything so...I mean...was he surrounded by losers?

Cobb is an alien. I think Ill skip voting on this one.

There was no MVP award given out for much of Cobb's prime years....the first MVP award (which Cobb won) was handed out in 1911, and from 1915-1921 there was no MVP.

The award was brought back in 1922 when he was 35 years old, and they implemented a silly rule where a player can only win once in his career (which is part of the reason that Ruth only won 1 MVP).

I had a feeling that something like that existed because his numbers didn't make any sense otherwise.

I'll take Cobb.

Early in his career, the Tigers went to three straight World Series (1907-08-09), but lost every time.
