Seriously, though, while I believe Ichiro is grossly over rated, I 100% believe he is and should be a 1st ballot HOFer. I put him in the Tony Gwynn/Pete Rose category.

But he COULD have hit 40 if he wanted to. Everyone says so.
There actually is a story about Ty Cobb saying that he could hit homers if he wanted to then he hit like 5 in 2 games and went back to his regular swing after that.

I will re-add Trout to the next poll. If any single player gets mentioned in the debates, I try to add them in the next poll.

What do you mean, any player?

Like, remember when Mo Vaughn was the most feared hitter in baseball for a few years?

Hoping we take it up to Opening Day and maybe further. It's been a hoot
I heard the plan is to take it right up to the point where Pete Rose starts getting votes and has a chance to make the list, then immediately shut it down with no explanation.

Joc Pederson got mocked by a bunch of Brewer fans and went on a tear the next games as well. Doesn’t mean he “could have done that if he wanted to”. He just got hot for a few games.

You think this thing will hold everyone’s attention for the years it will take for people to start SERIOUSLY considering Pete Rose as the best player available?

True, but Joc is kind of a streaky homerun hitter anyway. An equivalent would be Joc telling a reporter he was gonna start stealing a bunch of bases, then stealing 6 in 2 games or something.

Only if the opposing team started a catcher with a broken arm.

And even then, Joc would get caught 3 times before accruing 6 steals.

Assuming there was some way in hell he had the on base opportunities to have that many steal attempts.

Anyone want to stump for anyone specifically?

I am sticking with Hornsby. I have been stumping for him for a few rounds now. He has the WAR7 and he was the best player in the game pre-Ruth. He is close with Wagner, but Wagner was more of an Aaron-type accumulator rather than the MONSTER season (WAR7) type. As for pitchers, I see it between Johnson and Clemens. I would prefer Clemens, but he doesn’t get the support here.

Argument? Stump Mantle. Stump Ohtani. Stump Musial or Young.

No pitcher, in my mind, should get in on this list before Johnson.
166.9 career WAR (only Ruth bests that among any MLB players ever to have played)
91.1 WAR7 (best in MLB history, even better than Ruth's)
147 ERA+ (4th best in history)
Still holds the record for most career shutouts
Held the most strikeouts in a career record for nearly 40 years
Largely the only really good pitcher on the Senators for a long time
I think he should have been getting serious consideration at the number 3 spot so its borderline criminal that he isn't running away with it at 8th

My 2nd vote is for Cy Young. I don't how devalued wins are now, 511 is legendary. His career WAR (163.6) is just a notch below Johnson's. The dude has a freaking award named after him. How many other players can claim that kind of legendary status (or could, if they were still alive)?

My 3rd vote is for Rogers Hornsby. Best position player left on the board, in my opinion.

And I think Speaker (who is a step ahead, not below Wagner, remember we had this conversation in a previous thread. I thought you acknowledged that), Musial and Wagner are all a bit higher than Mantle (although it is really close between Musial, Wagner and Mantle). Roger Clemens also enters the conversation with Musial, Wagner and Mantle.
