Hornsby and Johnson have been talked about a LOT.

Make an argument for Mantle, Musial or Young. Educate us as to why they should be considered here.

Voted big Train. Cy had 10 years in the 19th Century and the wacky pitching uses. Then feasted on a starter league. Hornsby was a defensive joke. Mantle had too short of a career. Musial was close.

Still beating the drum for Honus. A lonely task

Johnson - 417-279, 2.17, 1.061 WHIP, 3509 K, 531 CG, 110 SHO, 2 MVP (2 additional top 5, 2 more seasons receiving votes)

Young - 511-315, 2.63, 1.130 WHIP, 2803 K, 749 CG, 76 SHO, no awards given during his era

Young retired in ‘11, so it is difficult to look at his numbers from that era and grade them confidently.

I am with you on Honus. Unfortunately, I have no idea how good he was defensively. But assuming he was AT LEAST average, the fact he put up those numbers from the 6 is amazing.

stan the man should not be here... he is basically ted williams light...

the biggest buggaboo on Hornsby is that he was passed on with the baton... Cobb passed the baton to Ruth, skipping Hornsby...

so for me this is Mantle vs Johnson...

and here is where i will go Yankee homer... and go Mantle...

From what I've read, from contemporary players, Wagner was a good defender. A lot of range and soft hands. Kind of remarkable, he looks like a plowhand in photos. And Horsnby was an indifferent fielder at best. Same as Ted, all he cared about was hitting

But Hornsby’s bat was AMAZING. Look at all that bonded text…

He had 6 seasons with 10 or more WAR

Ted had three of 10+, two more of 9 WAR. And probably lost one or two to the War. But was a lousy fielder

Between the 2 pitchers, I would go Johnson over Young.

Between the 3 hitters, I would go Hornsby, Musial, Mantle.

For the 5, I think I would rank them…

Hornsby
Johnson
Musial
Mantle
Young

remember CY might have gotten an award named after him...

But mickey, got the whole trophy shelf named after him...
Reminds me of the comment about what a huge coincidence it was that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. What are the odds?

Didn't the Yankees sell their collective souls to the devil? Shouldn't that affect their HOF inductions under the character clause?
