It has to be, in my mind, Walter Johnson. Gehrig is great, don't get me wrong, and should be in the top 10. But Johnson carried his team more than Gehrig did. Gehrig had help. Johnson, for most of his career, did not.
I am holding my vote back as a tie breaker, but I think this is my thought. I think there is a big enough drop at this point where a pitcher needs to be considered, and the board seems to have decided that Johnson is the best pitcher ever.

Ruth's last year with the Yankees was '34. They won the World Series in 35, 36, and 37.

Not in 35 (Tigers). But they did win 36 37 and 38 and Gehrig was on all those teams. And both 36 and 37 he was still one of the best in baseball (MVP in 1936) That said I voted Johnson

Again, I believe Gehrig is top 10. Just not better than Johnson.

In this thread I originally voted for Walter Johnson... as I really don't think Gehrig should be considered here...

but the more I am looking at it... I don't want Walter Johnson here either...

Gehrig is arguably the best post season player of all time... that alone, makes me boost him up, despite my not wanting to vote for him...

Johnson, did not have much playoff experience, and the experience he has was later in his career, and was not anything special... it is unfair to focus too much on playoff numbers for a player who doesn't have much... but the post season is legend makers... regular season is reputation makers...

Johnson may be the best regular season pitcher of all time... but I just can't reward a player that has no legend...

so I am changing my answer to Gehrig...

Is this where we start ragging on you being a Yankee homer?

Relax. Yankee fans aren’t homers. They are critical thinkers who have simply come to the natural conclusion that everything Yankees is simply better than any other options.

I do think post season numbers are more than just tie breakers... but even post season numbers are a bit of a lie... because I don't care about a players overall stats... just their stats when they won... were they the reason they won??

Madbum, if you look at his overall playoff numbers, they are not SPECIAL... but that 2014 playoffs made him a legend...

Interesting way to rank the best players in MLB history. So if the player played like crap in a postseason series loss, it has no negative impact on his legacy? I wouldn't rank players that way but we each get a say based on how we see the best of the best.

This whole thing is just a popularity contest with a bunch of fucking homers. I may just pass on the rest of the polls.

Also, how come Von Hayes hasn't been on any of the lists?

didn't say, that's how I rank them... just that it is more than just a tie breaker...

and yes... IMO 1 player can win a WS but one player does not lose a WS... if someone got 0-4 in a game, was it their fault they lost, or did the rest of the team just not do enough to win,...

but one player can make a much bigger difference in the positive...

You should read what I write about them in the AL East thread…..
