My Nebraska history is not detailed, it's just impressions. I remember that the OU game was a huge game every year at one point, but I don't remember exactly what years Ozzie was the coach.
Do you remember what year George Rogers won the Heisman? It's kind of like that.

I actually do remember when George Rogers won the Heisman.

Tom Osborne was offensive coordinator for Nebraska in the late 60's under Bob Devaney. When Devaney retired after 70-71 back to back titles he appointed Osborne head coach. Osborne lost the majority of his 70's games to OU, pretty much split the 80's and owned them in the 90's. So yeah, he was probably around.

For starters OU already has a rival. It's Texas.

14 games with Texas over 80 years isn't much of a rivalry. Even the 10 over the last 15 years doesn't really qualify, IMO.
Hell, I went to Texas for 8 years and never considered NU a rival.
But I'm with you in calling out T.O. if not playing OU is just fear on his part, or "uncertainty" about the future. That's weak.

Y'know, even with a great program you're doing well to win a title every 20 years. It's pretty unrealistic to think you'll win more, no matter what your schedule, and even if you're consistently in the top 20. So why be scared to maintain a good fierce traditional rival regardless of conference affiliation? The energy that the Clemson game brings every year is awesome and I would never give it up for just a slightly better shot at the NC. If your team is NC worthy that year then they'll get there anyway, whether it's 2 cupcakes or 3. A life-long rival is just emotionally rich.
