"They can do a lot," said junior quarterbackJoshua Dobbs. "Since I've gotten here, we haven't graduated a receiver, which is crazy. So it's definitely a room that has a lot of depth, a lot of knowledge of the game and a lot of experience. It shows."

Alton "Pig" Howard, who led the team with 54 receptions, is back. So is Von Pearson, who led all Vols with five receiving touchdowns, and Marquez North, who was injured for much of last season but is only a year removed from a freshman season in which he caught 38 passes and was named to the Freshman All-SEC team. That's not to mention Josh Malone. The former top recruit in the state of Tennessee, according to ESPN RecruitingNation, played in all 13 games and had six starts as a freshman last season. He had 23 catches in 2014 and is running with the second-team offense this spring.

Vols CB Gaulden 'out' with injury

Tennessee rising sophomore cornerback Rashaan Gaulden sat out Thursday's practice at Haslam Field because of an apparent hand or wrist injury, and defensive backs coach Willie Martinez said Gaulden is "going to be out."

Martinez said he's not allowed to "talk a lot about injuries," but he acknowledged that Gaulden would be "limited" for the rest of the spring before later adding that he wouldn't be available.

"We're lacking at depth this spring with the corners," Martinez said. "We had four, and now we're down to three because Rashaan's going to be out."

Tennessee head coach Butch Jones wasn't available for comment Thursday. Only the Vols' assistant coaches are made available to media following Thursday spring practices.

While UT's cornerback depth improved Tuesday with the return of rising sophomore cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who had been sidelined for most of the spring after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, Martinez said the Vols once again will be a bit shorthanded without Gaulden.

"We're one down because of Rashaan, so it's really trading a guy for a guy," Martinez said, referring to Moseley's return.

"We've just got to get through spring, and we've got some guys that are really taking a lot of reps. But we've been smart about it at times, how much they get. We're going to finish spring here a couple guys short, but they're getting better."

Martinez praised Gaulden, who has served as Tennessee's first-team nickelback this spring, as one of the standout performers in the Vols' secondary through the team's first 10 spring practices.

"The first 11 practices, the guy that sticks out for us is Rashaan Gaulden," Martinez said. "He's really done a great job. Obviously, from the fall to now, he can execute our defense. We feel comfortable with him, and that (nickel) position is so critical for us. It's very important for us that you have to be a playmaker, and he's proven that. He's shown that when he was in there for the first 10 practices."

Mosley is one of the guys that I'm really looking forward to seeing this season. He wasn't very highy recruited but hear nothing but good things about him.

Cortez McDowell is another guy as well, came in as a DB but was switched to LB and sounds like he's catching on quite well.

Position switch: Charles Mosley, after working the first dozen practices at defensive tackle, was working with the offensive line on Tuesday, getting reps at guard in the drills that were during the open portion of practice. It’s obviously not a completely shocking move as coaches have mentioned it as a possibility since the end of the 2014 season. But it’s a bit surprising to see him get so much work at defensive tackle, and then make the switch so close to the end of spring.
