I remember the sacrifices, I will never forget and I thank all for their service.. Veterans and those lost in combat gave me what I have today, the house I live in, the truck that I drive, dogs that I love and the food that I eat. My choices and decisions are my own but I wouldn't have the freedom to make them without hose sacrifices, LEST WE FORGET!

This was a really nice post, Matty, though I'm uncertain why you have chosen to focus just on those that had their peters shot off.

A salute to ALL those who fought and served.

PS - Sorry for the joke, but I just watched two episodes of The Pacific and need some humor after the crying. Man that's a good series.

My wife and I took our seven-month-old daughter to the war memorial in downtown Ottawa today. We couldn't make it for the 11am ceremony (nap time overrules all other considerations) but we watched it on TV and it was especially moving. When we finally arrived, visitors were paying their respects and laying poppies on the tomb of the unknown soldier - a very touching moment considering the events a few weeks ago.

I did a tour of the monument with my daughter, and even though she can't understand, I pointed out the first world war inscription and explained that her German great-grandfather was injured in combat, but obviously didn't hold too much of a grudge against the allies because he moved to Canada to start a farm and a family. At the second world war inscription, I told her of her other great-grandfather, who volunteered to fly with the RAF.

I'm happy that my daughter is growing up in what is, by all objective measures, one of the most peaceful eras in the history of humanity. But I'm also sad that neither of her veteran great-grandfathers are here anymore to share their stories. I wasn't close with either, but knowing that they participated in those great wars lent real weight to the history lessons I learned in school.

To all our veterans, both here and gone, we remember and thank you.

was gonna put this in the drive you nuts thread but ill drop it here

at the end of the remembrance day ceremony yesterday as the veterans/soldiers/police/fire/scouts/girl guides etc were doing their parade to leave the cenotaph my family and I lined the track to watch them march by and we were next to an elderly man (in his 80's) with his grandson (early 20's)

was overhearing them talk and gramps (who wasnt a war vet) was going on about his 2013 tax return and how they (CRA) made 2 errors and wouldnt admit to or acknowledge it and that he spent so much time calling them and they probably have some person there entering the numbers and they entered them wrong and he was right and they were wrong and they finally reassessed his return and he was right and they were wrong *phew*

all the while the grandson was giving lip service to him and saying "yes grampa", "right grampa", "sure grampa", "thats too bad grampa" ... until ...

the cadets march by ... maybe 90% asian kids ... and grampa chimes in with "what is this hongcouver?" :L

and with a raised voice we here ... "WHAT THE FUCK GRAMPA"

My in-laws (especially my mother-in-law) do not seem to own a filter in this regard - Not to go off-topic, but I wonder just how much progress we have made as a society regarding racism. I think we just seem to be better at covering it up these days.

Is it wrong that Hongcouver made me smile?

Sometimes I am not so sure either. Most of the time I think progress has been made, often lots of progress. I hope so at least.

"What the fuck grandpa" = Progress.

I think it gets a little better each generation.

My Wifes Folks were born in Italy , and came over as late teens newly married. They have no issue with the term wop(without papers) ??
