This may turn out to be a four post thread ... but thought I'd post it outside the normal offseason thread.

In this offseason along with the bigger moves TEX has quietly acquired three young NL pitchers. This isn’t Nolan Ryan any more. I think every day when JD gets to work his first agenda item is “how do we improve TEX pitching system today?” The big position player moves get the spotlight but TEX management knows success in October depends on pitching quality and pitching depth.

We don’t know much of anything about … Miles MIkolas, Shawn Tolleson or Chaz Roe. Roe doesn’t look like much … but Mikolas and Tolleson might turn out to fill a depth position.

Miles Mikolas. RHP 6’5”, 215# (7th round, 2009 draft by SDP)
-5 years all in SDP minors; 299.2IP, 2.97ERA, 1.267WHIP. For SDP 2012: 32.1IP/25G. 2013: 1.2IP/2G.
-TEX acquired Dec 30 from PIT for Chris McGuiness. PIT got MIkolas in Nov25 trade with SDP.
-Here is how I bet this whole deal came down. PIT is weak at 1b with Gabby Sanchez only returning vet with Morneau gone. Bet PIT wanted Moreland in earlier talks but TEX couldn’t get PIT to agree to what TEX wanted. TEX knew about Mikolas from his time in the SD system and had him on their board as soon as SDP moved him. TEX offered PIT McGuiness but they dragged their feet still wanting Moreland. When TEX DFA’d McGuiness to make room for Choo … PIT had to bite or lose out on a potential upgrade … even a marginal upgrade. When PIT called TEX for McGuiness … TEX made the deal easy for PIT to agree to by asking for Mikolas which is who they wanted all along. Bet PIT is still talking to TEX about Moreland.

Shawn Tolleson. RHP 6’2”, 210# (30th round, 2010 draft by LAD).
-4 years all in LAD minors; 127.2IP, 1.34ERA, 0.932WHIP. For LAD 2012: 37.2IP/40G; 2013: faced only 2 batters.
-TEX acquired Tolleson Nov 30 off waivers from LAD. Appears waived to make room for LAD to protect a Rule 5 draft eligible player.

Chaz Roe. RHP 6’5”, 190# (1st round, 2005 draft by COL)
-Traded to SEA in 2010 granted FA 2011; signed by ARI 2012, TEX acquired off waivers Nov 1
-9 years for COL, SEA, independent, ARI. 898.2IP, 4.44ERA, 1.398WHIP. For ARI 2013: 22.1IP/21G

Hard to not look at a #1 rounder and find something good about him...I will be watching these 3 guys this spring for value.

GLuck

Sure. RHPs who were still available in the first round in 2005 when COL picked Roe (#32 overall, second supplemental pick awarded for loss of FA Vinny Castilla) include: Trevor Bell, Luke Hochevar and Clay Bucholz

That was eight years and three organizations ago ... not to mention his entire 2012 at AA independent Laredo.

Description reminds me of a skinny Dustin Nippert.

Shouldn't rant this early in the year but ... saying "hard to not look at a #1 rounder and find something good about him" ... only is relevant if the organization's got half way good predraft scouting. Looking at the 2005 draft as an example ... clearly COL is not real good at evaluating talent.

In the 2005 amateur draft here are their picks who made it to play in a ML game ...

1 round ... #7 overall ... Troy Tulowitzki ... 870 games
1S ... #32 overall ... Chaz Roe ... 21 games
31 round ... #927 overall ... Sean Halton ... 42 games
38 round ... #1137 overall ... Barret Browning ... 22 games

Tulo has a career 32.3WAR ... the other three guys all have negative WAR.

So the Colorado Rockies could have sent four of us guys to the draft and I figure in 1137 picks we might have done better than find one ML player out of the bunch. So ... fact that Roe was a 1S pick and that should mean something is quite misleading.

Just looking at the 2005 draft ... the reason why the Rockies suck year in and out is because they suck at picking good players to draft. Roe ... with his 9 years in the minors including a year in independent ball is a prime example.

Now ... I wonder saying all this what the heck JD saw in him? Unless he is a roster filler and the next guy on the bubble when TEX signs a RH bat.
