If we sign him to a long term deal it will be 5 years or more so we can spread out his signing bonus. The recent contracts have bumped up the RB market from where it was heading recently (Although Foster got a huge deal). Not sure what the team is thinking, but I think this would be a fair contract for all. McCoy just got 5 years for $40M with $18.25M guaranteed - guaranteed goes to $20.55 first day of 2016 so let's use that. Only the guaranteed money really matters. Other backs have gotten just over $20M guaranteed so I think that is what it will take to get him.
5 years $38M; $20M guaranteed.
Signing bonus: $13M
Year 1 salary $3M fully guaranteed
Year 2 salary $4M $2.5M fully guaranteed; $1.5M guarantees first day of 2016 season
Year 3 salary $4M + $1M roster bonus or incentive on games played (injury history)
Year 4 salary $4M + $1M roster bonus or incentive on games played (injury history)
Year 5 salary $7M + $1M roster bonus or incentive on games played (injury history)
Cap hits
Year 1: $5.6M
Year 2: $6.6M
Year 3: $7.6M
Year 4: $7.6M
Year 5: $10.6M
This doesn't really hurt our cap. In this scenario he doesn’t see year 5 unless he is still playing at this level (you can make year 5 $20M if you want) and likely gets to at least year 3 (we'd have a 2 year out at 2 for $20M) so basically it’s 3 for $25M or 4 for $30M. It’s probably slightly higher than we would want to go, but I don’t think we are going to let $1M or so per year change our decision when it comes time to make a decision. This would most likely give us the 4 year $30M deal with $2.6M in dead money to cut him before year 5. That's $7.5M per year. I think at least now Murray would want a little more and won't sign it. I also think the reason Murray hasn't been linked to any teams is because he is asking way too much. By the time he comes down we may be the only ones left standing.
Any thoughts?
