Something that's been kicking around in my head for a bit:

8.6 lost 3-1 vs. Astros after taking a 1-0 lead into the 9th
8.7 lost 2-1 vs. Astros after taking a 1-0 lead into the 8th
8.16 lost 4-3 at LA in 12th inning
8.17 lost 2-1 at CIN in 11th inning
8.21 lost 6-3 at NYM after taking 2-0 lead into the 7th
8.25 lost 7-6 vs TEX after taking 6-2 lead into the 7th.

If we win these games, we are 70-61, 2 games out in the west and in the WC.

As awful as our hitting has been, I think we could have overcome it with lights out bullpen work.

Sure.

Or we could have scored more than 2 runs in any of those games and either won the games outright or not put so much pressure on the bully to have to be absolutely perfect every time out.

Truthfully, this is one of the reasons baseballs is a beautiful art. In the NL, you have to construct a 25 man roster where the 25th man actually has a bearing on many games. How you construct that cocktail is where the genius lies. And there are no wrong opinions about how to go about it.
