JVR was only 23 when we traded him so I think it's fair to say we gave up on him early. The point is not specifically about JVR but that we get rid of young players too soon and now we are stuck with a bunch of guys who can't score while those players are lighting the lamp for other teams.

But looch we didn’t trade JVR for an old dman so I don't get your point? Look at it as a position change as that's what happened here. Flyers needed dmen badly.

I find myself sitting here at work, listening to some sound bites of the coach and various players after practice yesterday. I like what I hear and everyone is saying the right things, but then I hear Timonen state that they did not practice the power play "at all" in the preseason, which may be why they're rusty. How is this kind of shit even possible? I think we're right near the top of the league in power play opportunities and yet we're operating at a paltry 7.4% (2nd worst overall)?

If our even strength play was terrible under Laviolette, along with the power play that we didn't practice, what the fuck were we doing all preseason long? It's just infuriating. This team was completely unprepared for an Nhl season.

I think when Gee got hurt and couldnt attend the preseason Lavi was lost. Since everything on our PP goes through Gee Lavi didnt know what to do without him and was lost. I liked him as a coach but not sad to see him go as we needed a new direction. As far as Timmo he has looked terrible on the PP but a player of his experience on this team and in the NHL i dont see why not practicing the PP this preseason should effect his play that much. I hope he and the PP turn it around starting tonight.

It'd be a small miracle, that's for sure. Vancouver has the 3rd best penalty killing percentage to date.

It's the best explanation I can come up with. Really, it's more like what everything points to. We know these players can play. We've seen all of them do it before over and over again. It's not like G is suddenly a scrub. The guy has world class talent and once he gets it in gear, he's going to shred the league like he did a couple seasons ago. This is inevitable no matter who his linemates are and we're going to be a much better team once G is leading by example.

i will jump on the 'blow it up bandwagon' if things don't improve at the end of the month and in to november.. after the pens game i think the flyers have like 6 days off or something, enough time for a little mini-camp run by berube to hopefully get some of the kinks worked out.. i'd say if things are still bad after that it's time to start selling off vets

If we forget about just points for a moment, here are my grades on a good, fair, poor scale based on overall play that I've seen so far. I'm including guys who may have only played one game:

Even Strength
Good - Timonen, Hartnell, Voracek, Raffl, Gustafsson
Fair - Meszaros, Talbot, Simmonds, Couturier, Giroux, Read, Coburn, Newberry, McGinn
Poor - B Schenn, Grossmann, Streit, L Schenn, LeCavalier, Rinaldo, Hall, Rosehill

PP
Good - LeCavalier, Streit, B Schenn
Fair - Meszaros, Read
Poor - Simmonds, Giroux, Voracek, Timonen, Hartnell, Couturier

SH
Good - Giroux, Read, Couturier, Timonen, Meszaros
Fair - L Schenn, Grossmann
Poor - Talbot, Hall, Coburn

Goaltending
Good - Mason
Fair -
Poor - Emery

What say you?

Sorry, just noticed McGinn in the "Poor" category. Meant to put him in "Fair". Yes I know he scored a goal, but his play otherwise was so-so. Again, I'm trying to look beyond the stats at overall play on the ice in terms of generating chances offensively and preventing them defensively, regardless of the end result. I can't give too much credit to a guy who puts the puck into an open net off of a fluky bounce anymore than criticize a defender if the goalie gives up a bad goal.

I'm just going to do overall because i think i've only caught about half the games and don't think i've seen enough of everyone at each man-power to do it justice

Skaters
Good - Raffl, Gustafsson, B Schenn, Lecavalier, Couturier
Fair - Meszaros, Talbot, Simmonds, Read, Coburn, Newberry, McGinn, Voracek, Hartnell, Streit
Poor - Grossmann, L Schenn, Rinaldo, Hall, Rosehill, Timonen, Giroux

Goaltending
Good - Mason

The only real big differences that i can really see from your list and my opinion are lecav and schenn.. i think they've consistently created more chances than anyone else on the team.. i shortnened to just 'overall' when i couldn't remember if those chances were on the PP or at even strength haha

timonen and giroux need to be in the 'Good' section for the flyers to be competitive, and voracek or hartnell need to be in the 'Good' section for the flyers to be cup contenders

Well said. Regarding the two players above, both have been much stronger on the PP than 5 on 5.

JB this is a pretty spot on assessment. the only one i really would make a case to change is B Schenn i feel he has been one of our top two players by far.

Thanks! B Schenn has been great on the PP but his 5 on 5 play leaves much to be desired, particularly defensively.

When the hell is Giroux going to wake up?

I do believe that no one on this team is "untouchable" when it comes to trade talks.

If they don't get away from the 5 penalties per game average, they are screwed.
Rinaldo is a waste of space, and could be had for some empty Gatorade bottles.
