I remember one summer when my grandpa was putting up hay in the silo. He forgot to raise the auger before filling the silo, and buried it under 25 feet of chopped hay. Fortunately for him he had 2 grandsons visiting. Twice a day for 3 months we pitched hay down the feed chute. That hay was hot from decomposition, plus the Illinois summer heat. I would imagine that it was at least 120 degrees up there, with zero wind, except the occasional updraft in the chute, which would send a fork full of ground hay back up into your face. It was hot. It was hard. It was miserable. But it was the best summer I had as a kid.
