I remember one summer when my grandpa was putting up hay in the silo. He forgot to raise the auger before filling the silo, and buried it under 25 feet of chopped hay. Fortunately for him he had 2 grandsons visiting. Twice a day for 3 months we pitched hay down the feed chute. That hay was hot from decomposition, plus the Illinois summer heat. I would imagine that it was at least 120 degrees up there, with zero wind, except the occasional updraft in the chute, which would send a fork full of ground hay back up into your face. It was hot. It was hard. It was miserable. But it was the best summer I had as a kid.

this is what these now day kids need to experience ---just this

it seems as if they are all gettin tucked under the government wing of saftey and all

bunch of cry baby liberals softening up the USA boys :noidea::L

One of the saddest days of my life was watching a barn full of hay burn down in a wildfire. Just two week before I had helped put that hay in that barn.

There's nothing, and I mean nothing, that gets you fit like throwing small squares up on a flat bed semi trailer. I hurt thinking about it.

werkin on a farm does everythang ta build the young boy to a young man

I hated it when grandpa would bale hay first thing in the morning. All moist from the dew and it would weigh SO much. 15 years old walking along side that old baler for 12 - 14 hours a day. Sometimes he'd let me drive back to the barn. I don't know how many miles I put in, but I'd bet it was a bunch. I remember one year he gave me $10.00 after we were all done. I felt rich.... and tired.

I really miss my grandpa.

The two summers I spent working on my uncle's farm did more to convince me to go to college and get an education than anything else.

Problem was I wanted to have some fun before I went to college...so I joined the Army. :L

Same here. No way I was ready for college after high school so I partied for a year then joined the military and partied for a couple more years. Started taking correspondence courses through U of Oklahoma and Maryland when I was overseas, then finished up night school at Southern Miss.

I'm very thankful the military was there for someone like me.

My father says the same thing about working on his dad's farm as a kid.

Those big bacon eatin milk drinkin hard workin farm boys don't exist anymore.....this is a fact now.

With today's technological advances people are farming out of their living rooms. The good old days are over sirs. I have seen this all first hand as many of my best friends took over their fathers' farms.

Shit irrigation systems are ran by cell phones.....combines are ran by sattelites.......bails of hay toss themselves through the air now......

this is what needs ta happen thar JJM ------ juuuust listen tar

take them pizza fole eatin blobs off the couch
and set them in front of a trough full of taters and some ceeeeeern and make them eat the whole trough empty ----then repeat
till they become large and linemen
