no "expert" will answer this online that I have emailed or tweeted to

so Pronger is working for the NHL. He is not retired and still on IR from the Flyers. The local media here are saying he is a sure fire Hall of Famer on next years ballot. Wont he still be on IR from the Flyers? should he not be officially retired to be put in the Hall and be a NHL employee?

why is it being easily ignored by all the media how wrong this seems?

or am I missing some loophole here?

See, I understand this, but all it does is clarify that the Flyers are circumventing the cap. The condition sucks, but when you sign a player to a 35+ deal you take on the inherent risk of being stuck with their contract on the books/cap should that player be incapable of continuing to play.

Unless you are Ed Snider.

It pretty much reeks of this, because I simply can't see the same outcome if the Florida Panthers had signed a non-HOF bound player to a lengthy 35+ deal.

It will be interesting to see what happens. Columbus is going to be in the exact same situation here soon. Horton will never play another game. The precedent is set. They can LTIR him and get around the cap. He spends some time doing suit duties for the team (after surgery) and then once the deal is over, he takes a permanent job in the front office. I wonder if the league would step in and punish Columbus... (as they should anyone who tries to get around the agreed upon rules)

Even if Pronger didn't get a job with the NHL, the thing stunk to high heaven. Getting two checks? Such a conflict of interests it's not even funny.

Horton isn't a 35+ contract though, so LTIR is not necessary. He can retire and the Jackets don't use any cap space on him. A case like Horton is exactly why the rule is the way it is. This is a player that C-Bus intended to use for the duration of his contract. Now, due to unfortunate (to say the least) health issues, he probably won't be able to continue. The Jackets should not (and will not) be punished.

Signing a guy who is 35 to an 8 year contract is far from the same thing. The league and the Flyers should be ashamed of themselves. This just isn't right.

Also, Horton's contract wasn't cap circumvention, whereas Pronger's most definitely was written with circumvention in mind, I think that is what's bothering Mattola and others - NJ gets penalized because of Kovalchuk but Philly is having every golden door opened for them in their situation.

I simply wish the league would just change the rules. I'd rather less stringent rules about circumvention than pretending these contracts are kosher. Everyone and their brother knew the contract was a joke, and we were all waiting patiently for the day he either retired or was a pylon on the ice costing them valuable cap space. But nooooooo...they got a gift out of horrible circumstances.

Ah. There's the detail I didn't realize. I thought any contract counts against the cap for the duration and even if not completed still counts, unless LTIR loophole is deployed.

So I am both relieved and even more pissed off at the Flyers.

Well you see, when your team is not named the Devils, blatant cap circumvention is allowed. However, if your team is named the Devils the league will throw the book at you to make an example of you. So go ahead league, hand out 35+ contracts to cripples, trade for right-wing fanatic goaltenders that aren't playing so that you can reach the cap floor, the league will let it slide.
