presumably the NHL gave them some feedback, like the feedback on the Luongo deal that Gillis told them to shove.

Interesting little blurb at the bottom of that article... if the NHL continues an investigation into the contracts of Hossa/Luongo/Pronger etc., and they are found to be circumventing the CBA, the contracts won't necessarily be dissolved. Instead, penalties could be levied.... like losing draft picks.

I can't read the article right now but does it have any info on the structure of the new deal? I would be interested to see what it looked like.

the only detail is the rumour that it is a 15 year term.

Ouch, that is a bit much. I would think that the NHL wouldn't reject it a second time unless it was still really iffy but it is NHL management we are talking about so you never know.

When I first heard that they rejected a second contract my first thought was that Gary ran him off. Hopefully he can get something done and stay here.

KHL President Alexander Medvedev: "Ilya knows that our proposal is still on the table."

At this point, I wouldn't blame Kovy for heading home and taking that bundle of KHL cash...

Bettman refutes Kovalchuk report:

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman wants to set the record straight on the ongoing Ilya Kovalchuk saga.

Bettman refuted a report from the New York Post stating that the league rejected the Devils’ second attempt to come to terms on a contractual agreement with the star winger.

“In order for a contract to be rejected, there would have to be a contract submitted,” Bettman told ESPN.com Wednesday. “There has not been a signed contract submitted.”

The commissioner would not deny that there has been ongoing dialogue between the Devils and the NHL in an attempt to come to a compromise on a pact that would be agreeable to all parties involved, according to the website.

“I don’t know if there has been such cap advice, what the specifics of it might be, and I wouldn’t comment on it anyway because that’s a dialogue we regularly have with our clubs,” Bettman said.

Reports Monday indicated that Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and owner Jeff Vanderbeek met with Kovalchuk’s agent, Jay Grossman, and NHL officials at the league’s offices in New York.

Maybe that's why the Dtown signings aren't being looked at. What are they gonna do? Make us pick in the 6th and 7th rounds? Thanks, will do!:D
