Our cuts are starting to trickle in.

So far:

WR Ryan Broyles
DE Erik Williams



We weren't at 90 players to start, so I'm not sure how many more we have to cut to get to 65.

I'm betting these guys are all on the short list of players about to be cut:

TE Deon Butler, C Joe Madsen, CB Chris Owens, CB R.J. Stanford, DT Kerry Hyder, DT Roy Philon, G Torrian Wilson, LB Justin Cherocci, S Nate Ness, TE Casey Pierce, WR Vernon Johnson.

I think some combination of those guys are our 1st round of cuts. Teams generally don't cut guys that they hope to get on their practice squads this early, because other teams would then have a week to take a look at any of those guys. With that in mind, it should be the very back end of our roster trimmed free, basically...

Teams have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to cut their 90-man rosters to 75, and they must get down to 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday.

Pettigrew matched Ebron's season long catch of 20 yards in the preseason game last week. He is also the only TE we have that can block. Pettigrew isn't going anywhere.

They looked for Pettigrew on a couple of screens this season, too, so I'm thinking they may be looking to take advantage of teams that fall asleep on his receiving ability and surprising athleticism.

New Orleans used to love to sneak screens and delayed routes with their "blocking" TE, and they always seemed to get big chunks or key 1st down conversions by lulling the defense to sleep by having that TE block, block, and block some more only to suddenly blow past a lazy LB who wasn't ready to defend a route.

I think we'll see Pettirgrew in that role this year, with a few steady targets every game to keep the defense honest.

Add RB Desmond Martin to the list.

I'm a little surprised here, because I thought he'd be a definite practice squad candidate, but he wasn't making it much longer anyways.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go on the p-squad still if he clears waivers, but this move makes me less sure of that than I was a few minutes ago.

I'm pretty surprised they cut him before the final preseason game. I would have though he and Moore would have played pretty much the whole game...

I actually used Gilbert on NCAA 14 my first year as SMU. He was terrible.

Nothing random about my disdain for Pettidrops. 1st round TE who isn't good at catching passes. Waste or roster and cap space.
