You don't know this we know as much about Mettenberger or AJ McCarron as we do Mallett. We have no idea at all if he can play at this level, exp wise he is a rookie.

He knows our system, and a rookie doesn't. That combined with the fact that we have turned down a second for him in the past is all I need to know to know that bill believes he is a capable backup.

A rookie simply wouldn't have the time to learn our system well enough to be viable.

Bill likes to play games and often times over values and under values players. I don't know how all this will pan out, and to be honest I would rather he stay, but I just don't see it happening. He is free to walk next year with no obligation to the Pats at all, it's obvious the Pats won't or can't move past Brady so there is no incentive for him to stay. If BB values him as much as you seem to think I would think they would be trying to work a deal this year and I have heard nothing of that.

Why would you need to hear any of that? Most of the Patriots business stays in-house. It does neither side any particular benefit for people to hear an extension is being discussed.

Agents talk we know this, they do this to bolster the market for their player, agents want ESPN to know the Pats are talking to their player. This is and always has been true, but if and I mean IF Mallett is all that and a bag of chips and the Pats let him walk shame on them.

It gives them zero leverage here. None.

Mallet and NE's 2nd for Texas 2nd and 3rd

That would be reasonable and would give the Pats a lot of room to manipulate the draft. And you can always pick up Cassell again

You are not going to get a first for an unproven commodity.

Ryan Leaf was unproven, as was Mark Sanchez.

As was Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Vince Young, Brett Favre, Steve Young....

They are all unproven as starters until they have a few games or a season starting.

Bill Belichick likes him and evidently Bill O'Brien does too.

Dumb comparison and you know it, I won't even bother to tell you how this fails.

Mallett was originally considered a first round talent too. The only reason he fell was questions if he could keep his head on straight. He has been the picture of perfection in that regard here. That could pretty easily clear up that red flag.

Please do.

They were all unproven coming out of college.
Some were unproven when going to their second team.
Some were busts, some were not.
Some are HOF some are bankrupt.

Where's the fail?

And he has a howitzer attached to his shoulder.

And three years of understudy that even AJ McCarron would love.

We all know that the draft is a crap shoot but short of giving away your picks you have to take a guy. Here you have a guy that has been in the league four years and has not seen anytime at all even when the Pats were up by 36 points. In essence you are trying to sell a guy that has been in the league but could not or did not garner any playing time at all. Now all the teams you might be trying to deal with still have their picks so you can get a younger guy at less money. Of course all rookies are unproven but so is our 4 year back up QB.

Don't listen to JDM. He's clueless. You absolutely trade Mallet for for a 2nd or even a 3rd. No one knows if he can play. He's a FA soon and he's not going to stay to be Brady's back up. Get whatever you can or lose him for nothing.

The Howitzer is nice but IMO from what time we are allowed to see him in pre season ball his short game seems to fall short.

We could have had peyton manning and he wouldn't have gotten playing time. That means nothing.

Yes.

His knock is the quick out or short yardage. When he needs a .22, his cannon is still a Barret.

Even a third? We'll get that back as a comp pick...

Backup QB is more important than half the starting positions on the field.
