Excerpt

Points allowed per game: This is the most important and revealing defensive stat. While takeaways are important, the ultimate stat is points per game. That was not an option Barry was given for an answer, but it is the stat that dictates success more than any other.

Eight of the top 10 teams the past three years have winning records. And for those of you who thought the Redskins’ defense was the NFL’s worst, this is where you’re very close to being right. They ranked 30th during this time, ahead of only Jacksonville and Oakland. The Giants (20th), Dallas (25th) and Philadelphia (28th) weren’t exactly powerhouses in this category either. The more I checked out the defensive stats, the more it explains the NFC East's relative mediocrity the last few seasons.

More and more I am starting to like this Barry hire. He is not the like Gruden which is good since we need a vocal guy on defense. He is hungry, very demanding and vocal, and won't jump ship after a year to another team most likely

well hopefully he learned some things in detroit which can help him now

not sure we have given him the personnel he needs yet with holes at safety ILB and some age on the d/line and depth issues but it wont all get fixed in one off season

When a coach emphasizes takeaways a player could get caught up in trying to strip the ball as the player carries him 10 more yards down the field. Takeaways 1/3 luck, 1/3 force and 1/3 just being in the right spot at the right time. An aggressive defense is all they need to focus on and the turnovers will come. We fumbled the ball 15 times (lost only 7-got lucky) and threw 18 INT's collectively. More emphasis needs to be on offense NOT turning the ball over imo, but I assume Gruden is stressing the importance of each.

There's only one defensive stat that interests me.........holding the opposition to at least one point fewer than our offense scores every game thru the SB.

Shanahan was fanatical about building a defense creating hugh turnovers...didn't work out so well here.

points allowed is the only barometer to have . how we get there is the issue. building depth on defense is our biggest issue

Scoring defense is the bottom line stat any defense is judged by. You rarely see a team that's good scoring defense that doesn't also have a good overall defense. The converse is equally true. Just look at our defense last season.

The good thing is turnovers for teams don't tend to be a trend. We had terrible turnover luck last year i believe so hopefully that should turn around.
