Wayne Gretzky might coach Team Canada at the Spengler Cup this Xmas.

It was 10 years ago, September 2009, the Great One stepped down as the head coach of the Coyotes and now, a decade later, Hockey Canada is trying to persuade Wayne Gretzky to come out of retirement this Christmas.

LeBrun: Yeah, just for a little bit, if Hockey Canada has its way. Sean Burke the GM of the Spengler Cup team for Canada, has asked Wayne Gretzky whether he'd be interested in coaching the National team in that tournament. I spoke with Wayne Gretzky on Tuesday who said "It's an immense honour that Sean Burke has asked me to do this." He doesn't know if he can swing it. Right now I think he's having a lot of talks with the family. It's a busy time of year, we know the tournament's held December 26th to 31st so they've got plans. He's a grandfather, Christmas is a special time, but he is thinking about it. He'll give word back to Sean Burke at some point soon.

I think 99 would add more value playing than coaching.
and yes I did see the alumni game a few years ago where he was just out for a public skate.

For me, it's just not the same not seeing Hnat Domenichelli out there :D

Not a bad looking group of forwards to be honest, I mean there are some names there that had pretty solid NHL careers.
Yep and having to face Matt D’agostini this year vs his playing on the team they added a good line up.

I like bringing in Mitchell also gives a young player experience.

Yeah, that seems to be a recent development, Dante Fabbro was added to last year's Spengler Cup team and he had a fine tourney.

I forgot about Fabbro last year. Pretty good idea for them to do this every year. Especially closer to the Olympics when they can get those younger players that experience.

Canada wins 5-1 over HC Davos and has a bye to the semi-final.

/In all honesty though, it's tough to root for this Canadian team with all those ex-Oilers on the coaching staff.
