Replace Crawford simply because the competition is so deep for Canada

presumptive snubs are speaking out

When a player isn’t selected to play in the Olympics for their country, it stings. For Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson it was more of a shock.

Johnson has been a fixture on Team USA in both the Olympics and World Championships over the years and, as Aaron Portzline of The Columbus Dispatch reports, he wasn’t very pleased about the omission and puts some of the blame on Jackets coach Todd Richards.

“It’s over now. … Anything that’s said now is empty and meaningless,” Johnson said. “When I needed the belief and trust, I didn’t get it, and I didn’t get it when it counted from numerous people.”

Canes center Eric Staal, via The Raleigh News & Observer, on not being chosen for Team Canada Tuesday.

“I really felt I’d get an opportunity to defend the gold medal, but unfortunately it was not to be,” Staal said by phone from Raleigh. “They went with other choices.

“Does it feel good to get left off the team? No. Am I good enough to be on the team? Yes. I feel I’ve proven that. Do I think they made a mistake in not taking me? I hope to prove that.”

More Staal: “Like our team, it’s been a bit of an up-and-down year for myself. Coming off (the injury), I did not have the start I wanted, and it took a little while to get back to my style of game and play like I normally do.

“Some of the players chosen, in my opinion, I’m a better player than, but I needed to do a better job in the first half of the season. They went a different way. That’s life. We’ll move forward, with all our focus on us getting back in the playoffs.”

Why do I think another tv might get pitched out of a window?

Yeah, was just going to put that somewhere:
Blue Jackets: Olympic team snub frustrates Jack Johnson | BlueJackets Xtra

Could be some tension for sure. Richards could be using it to motivate a guy who has not been at his best (at it seems to be working based on how he played in New York). But JJ is not a quiet guy and at times it has appeared that Richards is losing the room. If not for Dubinsky (another possible USA snub), the room would have already collapsed.

I guess I had forgotten that Richards is an assistant coach. Makes the lack of phone call to JJ before the announcement even more of a shitty thing to do.

Richards has some fences to mend. And I don't expect JD and Jarmo are going to give him a lot of room to make mistakes like this. The team is slowly coming together. And this could destroy all of it.

Fuck I hate NHL in the Olympics. Fucking politics. This and Yzerman v St Louis in Tampa will be interesting to watch for sure.

I watched the post-game presser with Marty St. Louis after he scored two goals (GWG + empty netter) and he basically said he was extremely disappointed and "I'll leave it at that". The guy is rightly choked that he wasn't named to Team Canada.

He was probably thinking he was a lock, much like JJ. Been there before, plays for one of the decision makers, no one said ahead of time he wasn't...
