I think we can clearly see now that it doesn't work. Because every year a team that is good with the same players regresses, adding this major piece does not make the team better. But everyone falls for it every offseason. I wasn't nut-hugging the Browns as much as others. But I was certainly misled on the Jets. And I won't quote a poster. But he said the Bills did nothing on offense this offseason when I wasn't clear I was talking about the Jets adding talent. Well, okay then. Turns out Buffalo adding two decent pieces was better than the Jets adding one overrated piece who plays the same position as Cole Beasley but just had more targets before this season. What was so special about Jameson Crowder? Had it not been for fantasy football, no one would think he was good.
I admit I was wrong on the Jets. I also admit I was wrong to join the Cleveland hype ultimately. The team that actually did improve based on collective additions and not going all out on superstars was the 49ers (I mean they added a couple but loaded up on adding small pieces. The Saints did it in 2017, 2018, and in their SB 2009 year. The Patriots also did it this year and look how they are doing. The Packers have done it.
One other thing is on the Giants. They took a hit on defense losing what they lost, and that does not mean that had they kept the other pieces and just lost Vernon they would be as bad on defense. One player does not make a defense. The Giants fell apart defensively because of losing a lot of pieces. However, their o-line is still a problem. That didn't get fixed with just one signing. Keeping Vernon or the defense intact would have made no difference to start. Though with Jones, it might have helped. ODB same issue.
What we saw that has translated into this season. The Pats, Bills, and 49ers added several pieces. The Giants lost several pieces and didn't add enough. the Raiders, Browns, and Jets added a few big pieces. We can see the results. Next offseason, a lot of other teams will be following this path because the teams that made the "splashes" are way too magnified and it's a copycat league.
