I would lean towards thinking they would bring up Mazara to play in LF in that scenario unless it was very late in the year and Brinson had outperformed Nomar all year.

I'd say it depends on who looks the most ML ready at the time. Hell, Gallo could be the one brought up to play LF for all we know.

My thought is the defense you get out of Brinson offsets offense Of Mazara and DDJ but of course performance up till then will be the key

I was basing it on the fact that Mazara has 575 AB at AA or above while Brinson only has 140. I am thinking that if both of those two do well that Mazara has the advantage in that he has had upper level success longer.

I wouldn't doubt Gallo being brought up first at all. I think if they are all having good years that Gallo has the advantage unless they need someone in CF.

Agree. That's what ST is all about isn't it?

Hello, Win Column!

Good discussion here by Jared Sandler and Mike Bacsik regarding what they call a wide open LF job. They think there is a significant chance that Hamilton's knee will keep him from opening the season with the Rangers. They look at the possibility that Gallo platoons with Ruggiano in LF.

Bacsik doesn't think Mazara will come up before May or probably June at the earliest.

They even think Profar could play some LF at the beginning of the season. Not likely, but a possibility.

An interesting note from Mike Bacsik is that the Yankees are the only team at this point to not sign a free agent this offseason.

Mazara is no slouch on D.

But he doesn't play CF, which is the distinction between the 2, if they're reasonably close offensively, and the OF defense sucks, then it makes sense to bring up Brinson and move Deshields to LF, where he's a much better fit defensively

And there's a big difference between being average in LF/RF (which is what Mazara is seen at right now) and being above average in CF (which is where Brinson is)

Nobody was saying Mazara is bad on defense, Brinson is just that much better

In that scenario would it make sense to bring both of them up and bench DeShields? If they are both reasonably close offensively that is?

Their progression has also been very different:

Gallo has been more of a 2 steps forward, one step back kind of guy, he'll improve, get promoted then regress at each level

Brinson has been the big leaper, seemingly drastic improvement each year

Mazara has been the steady plugger, no big leaps each year, but also no real regression at each level

At least that's how it seems to me

Maybe, really just depends on where everyone is, the discussion has been focused on one or the other so I've been staying within that context

Also, he leads off then? Not sure Brinson would be ready for that task yet, which is why I'm assuming it starts off as one or the other, b/c Deshields would concieveably have a spot in the OF to lead off

I think I am just having a tough time wrapping my head around a LF who would hit maybe 4 HRs during the season. I just don't like the idea of DeShields playing a COF spot on any kind of regular basis. I am not sure who would lead off, but they will need a new lead off hitter soon(a year tops) anyway because before long DeShields should be on the bench. Maybe Choo leads off.

I don't if the LFer hits 4 HRs if the CF is hitting 15-20 (if that's Brinson in a full season)

I was thinking about that myself. I am not sure Brinson would be ready to hit quite that many the first year. I was thinking more like 12 or so on a full year basis, but eventually 20 or more. Mazara might be able to hit 20 or more his first year and eventually 30 or more. I can see a combo of Brinson and DeShields hitting 16 and the combo of Mazara and Brinson hitting 32 this year. Of course the numbers would be less than that because they surely wouldn't be up here a full year.

True, everyone here is thinking outside the box anyway with thinking that either Mazara or Brinson contribute this year anyway

I myself value defense first and am ok with non-traditional situations as long as they work (KC got 5 HRs from RFers in 2015, but 18 from CF)

Hamilton/Ruggiano/Rua are my guesses to log 75% of the ABs in LF this year anyway

not ready to bench DDJ until we see if what he did last year continues. he was a catalyst leading off for us.
